Urgent...P/S pump wont move
Urgent...P/S pump wont move
Hi everyone. Well, im going to change the water pump today on my 86 firebird. I loosend the altenrator and ac compressor to remove the belts. But Now i cant loosen the power steering pump. There 2 bolts to loosen on the top, so i loosenned them, but it wouldnt move. Then i looked behind the pulley and i noticed 2 more bolts. Am I suppose to loosen them to move the ps pump? If so, How do I? I tried to do it for 20 mins, but its so damn tight and I have no room to loosen it. Any suggestions? thanks heres a picture btw..the red circles indicate the 2 bolts behind the pulley
Re: Urgent...P/S pump wont move
just remove the bolts holding the ps pump bracket onto the motor, the 2 behind the pulley hold the pump onto the bracket, even if u get the pump off the bracket ur still gonna have to remove the bracket to get the pump off.
the only way to get to those 2 bolts is to go get a ps pump pully puller and remove the pulley

Thanks for the reply. I only see 2 bolts that can be easily removed, one of them being the sliding one. Where are the other ones? Are they easy to access? thanks again....heres a pic

Actually in the manual it says to remove the pulley before removing the pump. But is it neccessary to remove the pump to get the belt off to install the water pump? For installing the water pump, the manual says "Remove the power steering pump bracket and swing aside." But it doesnt say how to do it....grr

I believe there are two bolts and one nut, if you only have to lossen one blt to adjust than disregard looking for a third fastener.
You just need to remove the adjustment bolt and pivot bolt to remove the pump and adjustment bracket. Easiest way to get to the bolts is to remove the pulley which requires a pulley remover and installer.

Yeah, but I dont understand something. Right now, theres tension on that belt on the power steering pulley. WOudlnt it be hard to remove the pulley? And if i do get the pulley off, wouldnt it be hard to put back on since of the tension of the belt? I woulnt be able to slide the pump up or down with the belt on since the pulley would be in the way. Do I make sense? lol This is strange...any ideas?

Might be time to turn this over to someone with experiance.
Re: Urgent...P/S pump wont move
uggh, this is so retarted. There has to be a way to slide the pump up and down like the alternator and a/c compressor. Should I look for any bolts on the back of the power steering pump?

I have had some luck getting the slide bolt behind the pulley with a 9/16 open end. You might mave to grind it down a little to make it thinner so it will fit.
It has been a while but I think there is one on the back and IIRC it was a stud on the back of the pump that went through the bracket with a nut.

Re: Urgent...P/S pump wont move
There is one bolt up front to the water pump side of the PS pump. Just needs 2B loosened. There is a nut on the back side that attaches to a stud off the pump assembly. I think this one just needs 2B loose, but might beed 2B removed. On the V6 there might need to be anotherfront bolt as well. I have an 86 V8
Re: Urgent...P/S pump wont move
Good news! I found the nut behind the pump and loosened it and, the pump moved....yay!!!! it was so obvious....lol...you guys are better than the stupid repair manual lol
