Re: Cooling Fan Help

With my 2.8 the fan didn't kick on at all. So I replaced this sensor on the intake, below the throttle body, and the relay that is attached to the firewall. Now it comes on. One thing I don't like is that it kicks on around 220 which I absolutely hate.

Consider going with an aftermarket kit/sensor that allows the fans to kick on at a much lower temperature. Many companies offer them....

Cool deal, I'll look around. I read somewhere on the site where a person got what your talking about from JEG's.

Is there a way to possibly change the computer settings to kick it on at a lower temp?

No. The temp sensor in the block senses coolant temps and closes the circuit at 220*, causing the fan to come on. Too bad they don't make sensors that close the circuit at like 200*.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

if it does not come on with the air conditioning i would suspect the relay. th erelay is located ont he firewall relay bracket above the brake booster. it will be the only one with a green wire with a white stripe going to it. ground that wire. did the fan come on? if not replace the relay, if so replace BOTH the ac pressure switch and the block temp switch, or find the broken spot in that wire.

if the fan did not come on replace the relay. then re-check. if it still does not come on hotwire the fan directly to the battery to make sure your motor works.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

Anyone know which kits work with our cars to make the fans turn on sooner?

If you are still using the '90 ECM, then Yes, it can be changed to turn the fans on & off at whatever temperature you like. Can change a bunch of other stuff too.

u can buy a jet fan switch,or for about 6-10$'s in parts u can make an override switch, wich will allow u to turn the fan on any time u like

alls u need is one toggle switch, and about 4-5 ft of wire.

mount the toggle in the dash, ground one of the 2 pins on the back of the switch. the other pin u run upto the green/white wire on the fan relay.
when u flip the toggle u complete the ground circut to the relay powering up the fan.

the best part is if u forget to turn toggle switch on, the ecm/sensor will still kick the fan on @ 220.

My relay has 2 of those wires going into one contact. Is that normal? Im having similiar problems with my fan. If i ground the green wires to the red, the fan kicks on.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

yes, two wires is normal. one comes from your fan switch in the cylinder head, the other comes from your AC pressure switch.

DO NOT connect wires to other wires like that. when we say "ground" the wire we mean to the ground terminal on the battery or to the cars body somewhere. you can screw stuff up just plugging wires into one another if you don't know what you are doing. use caution.

i would replace your fan switch, that will probably fix the problem. if you have a napa near you you can replace it with a lower temperature one. just ask for part number OP6675. fan on at 200-220 off at ~190. the stock one is on at ~240 off at ~220. this is what i use, i do not currently have a toggle hooked up, but i am thinking about getting one. i am probably going to use an extra fog light switch i have laying around. then i can make it so the light lights when the fan is on as well.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

Ahh thanks for the heads up. One more thing, does that mean i can install a manual switch between the green wires and a ground? Would it work? Thanks.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

yeah, just splice in to one of the green/white wires and run that to one switch contact, and run the other contact to a ground and you are good.
