AC question
I fixed my AC finally just as it is beginning to get hot here in Florida. My question is what type of freon did our cars come with? The old or new stuff? I would like to know for a price if I have to convert it or not and to tell the shop what I would have in my sysem. My car is a 89 RS Camaro with a 2.8.

Re: AC question
R12, the old stuff. I'd just convert to R134a; any parts store sells a conversion kit for real cheap. Have a look at this guide: https://www.thirdgen.org/retrofitac

2.8, you can use freeze12. It's a "safer R12" and if you know a local mechanic, you should get off cheap (it costs them about $20/can).
It works killer

Re: AC question
Can this stuff be purchased from Autozone or another store. I really don't know any mechanics. For me to put freon into my system one place quoted me at about $110 to fill the whole system up.
Re: AC question
$110 maybe if it is empty, most places will charge you about $40 to $60 a can (some try to charge you this per pound). Too bad you couldn't take a ride down here, I could hook you up. My bud also has the dye to put in it and use a black light after a few days. Then the leak can be detected/repaired properly.

Re: AC question
I had to replace the condenser because a rock went through it while on the interstate
. There is alot of construction around here for the past couple of years and ahead. I really don't want to pay that much to get freon. I have other things to fix/need. Everything was working great when I got the car back in August. The condenser has been broke since about late Sept. I am just worried that other parts have gone bad.

Keep looking around, I made friends with a shop by saving him $3000 on his new roof after the hurricanes two years ago
. Actually he always hooked me up even before that, you have to network. Even if it means volunteering some of your time, like I did several years ago and walked away with some good stuff that people left at the shop after a repair (the best was a 2 bolt main '74 Vette motor, but I got rims, heads, even whole parts cars that were salvaged for a major repair). Re: AC question
I am starting to make some friends that are mechanics and have other connections. A guy here locally is replacing my U-joints, trans mount, tailshaft gasket and the gasket on my rear diff where the DS connects for like $80.
