Does anyone know the location of the coolant temp. sending unit on a 2.8 v6? Im installing a aftermarket gauge but I can not find the location. Thanks.

 

drivers side head, right near the front coner of the valve cover.

 

You mean the green plug with like 3 wires attached to it? I thought thats the sensor.

 

yeah all you have to do is unscrew the old one and crew in the new aftermarket one.

 

hmmm but how can the new one send the temperature reading to the ECM if no wires attach to the new one since its mechanical?

 

did you buy an aftermarke gauge? or sending unit. becuase the after marker gauge is just a water temp gauge with a thick wire coming out the back the has a thermometer on the end and screws into the head. so once you hook that up the stock gauge in the guage panel wont work anymore but the new gauge will.

 

I bought a aftermarket mechanical temp gauge. I dont care about the stock gauge, because there isnt one...lol But, isnt the thing im replacing a sensor that tells the ECM the temperature?

 

u have to find a new place to install that watertemp quage there should be a spot on the cyl head u can screw it into

 

How would that look like? Would it be around the valve covers?

 

look on the sides of the cyl heads there should be plugs screwed into the sides of them somewere

yeah there is one on the drives side head at the front right. right below the bottom corner of the valve cover, and another place to put it is in the back of the passanger side head by the coil.

 

Alright guys, good news and bad news. I found the sending unit, bad news, I cant get to it...There is a black bracket, some steel lines and the AC compressor in my way. Can I remove this black bracket? How about the AC compressors? Any other tips? Thanks. Here are some pics...

 

ya man it can all come off just don't unhook ur A/C lines or u'll have to get it recharged. I'd just hang ur compressor to the side and hope that the coolant switch will come out easy.

 

Alright, ill give that a try. Should I put anything on the new sending unit threads before screwing it in?

 

maybe just some anti seize. I'm not sure tho that's a good question it might not need any sealent tho but i could be wrong

 

ive never used sealant and never had any problems.

 

Alright guys, this is harder than I thought. That black bracket is attached to the ac compressor and PS pump. I removed the ac compressor to try and get to the sending unit, but still very tight. I can remove the large bracket that holds the compressor and PS pump, but i dont have the patience for that now...lol I rather do the more important things in the car and the temp gauge is really just an accessory for now. I still need to fix that cooling fan that wont kick on...

 

Wouldn't it had been better to do this to the fan overtemp switch located on the passenger head on the rear? The coolant temp sensor is used for a lot of things. Including the fans.

 

I didnt try to get to the temp sensor, i tried to get to the sending unit right in front of the valve cover on the drivers side. It has one green wire connected to it, which fell out. If I did this at the fan switch, what would I do with the fan switch if the probe goes in?
