overheating promblem

well here's the details:

I got a 3.4 swapped camaro with a 5-speed and a/c.

My fan only comes on when i jump the terminals for diagnostics or when i jump it at relay. The car gets really warm but the gauge doesn't go up to high.

My cat is turning bright red when idling for awhile. (It's not clogged i already checked). My idle is at anywhere from 1200-850 (i already gave it a major tune-up to). When it does idle it has a shake to it not as bad since i swapped in a new flywheel but still a little bit but it is fine when i give it even a little bit of gas.

Now i know i can just keep throwing parts at this but it sounds like it could be the A.I.R. diverter valve makeing the 02 think its lean and torching the cat at the same time. My brother thinks the coolant temp sensor is no good and making the car think that it is cold and keeps throwing fuel in the mixture.

Maybe we're both right or maybe I'm not thinking about something i just wanted to get some opinions first b4 i go throwing parts at it cause maybe someone had something similar happen or any experience with this and might have a suggestion. Cause most of the time the problem is the easiest thing u just never thought of until afterwards.

Re: overheating problem

i had pretty close to the same problem with my camaor when i rebuilt the top end. it would idle rough and the engine got real warm real fast and the headers started to glow red at the bottoms( withing a matter of minutes) what it was the valves where not adjusted to great and letting in to much air and not out enough. pulled the covers off did a little adjustment and the problem went away. the only thing for me was i could hear a rocker nocking so i knew i had to do that. can you hear any nocking or rattling in the eninge?

Re: overheating problem

I don't know if works the same with a 3.4 but with my 2.8 I had changed the relay on the firewall and the coolant temp sensor on the intake (under the throttle body).

Replace your fan switch, and allow the engine to run (when cold) with the radiator cap off for a minute or two. This will release any possible air pockets in the system, causing the engine to overheat....

Re: overheating promblem

pairtoe87 i don't have any knocking in my engine at all and i followed every step to adjust the rockers, that has crossed my mind tho. Street lethal i was just thinking about doing that at work today cause the cars at my bro's house and i can hardly get out there so i like to plan ahead but I'm also going to get a new rad cap just incase it's not holding pressure as well as it should be plus doing all that would be something cheap and easy to try first. I'm also throwing a code 34 that is short in the circuit of the maf sensor or just a bad maf. I read on here somewhere that a bad coolant temp switch or a coolant temp sensor can throw a maf code.
----------
rsrsrs i have changed those relay's also hoping that would do it for the fan but it must be the coolant switch or a short but i traced all the wires in that whole car. I've been poking at this car for about 2 years cause i can hardly get out to my brothers house and i wanna get this maro where she belongs... on the road.

Re: overheating promblem

i forgot to mention that also when my maro idles the engine vibrates maybe more like a shake cause it's pretty bad could a MAF sensor be the problem cause that hardly makes sense to me unless that shake is the engine starving missfireing dumping gas into the cat and eventually turning it red after like 5 or 10 minutes of idle.
----------
the only code i'm pulling is a 34 and that's a promblem with the MAF but the mafs don't come cheap so i wanted to check everything else first.
