Re: 3.1 in a 2.8 car

would there be a big performance boost from a 2.8 to 3.4 engine?

Re: 3.1 in a 2.8 car

yeah the 3.4 was a bad little engine

would be worth it

the 3.4 was used in montes and Z34's and such

was lots better as far as power goes

have to watch head gaskets and such in them though

as with alot of other engines

commonly fail

put new ones on before sticking the engine in the car

save lots of problems later

good insurance for the engine life

2.8 and 3.1 are one in the same on the outside

just different bore/stroke/crank

externally they are identical, brackets and configuration and all that

good luck

The 3.4 is a bored and stroked 2.8. Yes, a 4th gem motor is your best bet.

That is a 3400, a totally different engine. A FWD motor will not work without major modifications.

FF, don't forget that the Lumina and Z34 of the mid '90s had the 3.4 DOHC, which is NOT a 3400.

3.4 from a 4th gen F-body ('93 to '95) would be the easiest swap that uses the same mounts and acessories from the 2.8.

Yeah, I know, but I made sure to say FWD to make it easy to determine what engines would work.

Could the DOHC upper end be adapted to a RWD block, though? I have seen the heads on ebay multiple times for cheap money.

Not even remotely close to swapping around.

Thats cool. The block has machined slots for the dohc part, then places for "timing covers" to bolt up to it.

QFT!

I have toyed with the idea of making a 4V/cyl pushrod 660, but the pushrods would be going through teh middle of at least 4 of the intake ports IIRC.

No, you retain your 2.8 electronics when you retain the 2.8 intake and accessories.

Re: 3.1 in a 2.8 car

All you need to swap over are the accessories, intake, fuel rail/injectors, and timing cover and you should be good to go.
