Cleaning out the engine bay
I have been cleaning out my engine bay of all of the stuff that the motor doesn't need to run. So far I have gotten rid of the EGR except for the solenoid so that the SES doesn't come on all the time, misc. brackets, and have shortened up some of the vaccum lines. Now I want to take out some other stuff that I may not need. I want to pull out the charcoal canister if I can without messing up the motor, I'm leaving the cruise control, I also want to put a breather cap on the PCV valve that has the tube from the intake tube. Anyone know of one that will fit. With the charcoal canister what all can I remove/plug up?

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
The charcoal canister is the vent for the gas tank. Don't plug the line...
I can understand why you might want to get rid of some of that stuff but some of it (like the charcoal canister) has a pretty good reason for being there. The charcoal filters the gas fumes from the gas tank vent. Then those fumes get burnt in the engine. If you are gonna plug that line then you need a vented gas cap or you are gonna have problems.
The PCV valve has to be hooked to the intake after the throttle body. The fresh air pipe for the breather can be plugged off at the valve cover if you run a vented oil filler cap. You can also buy a K&N style breather of the appropriate size and clamp this to the tube coming out of the valve cover and leave your stock oil cap. Those little filters can be had at pep boys or advance auto parts pretty cheap.

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
I was just going to find a breather for the valve cover and plug up the hole on the intake tube.
The charcoal canister sounds like alot of trouble to take it out if I just plug it up. So all that I would need really for it is a vented gas cap? Then I would just plug the lines, what about the sensors that connect to it?

I think those are for the "purge" when the ECM tells that solenoid to allow the vent fumes to go to the intake to be burned.
It will probably just keep trying to work like your EGR stuff. They are usually on the same circuit and work at the same time.

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
i got rid of my charcol can when i did my turbo.
u can eliminate it,but u need to either get a vented gas cap or leave the vent line from the tank open..
with that said i caped my vent line and did not have a vented gas cap,i never had a problem.sometimes i would notice presure inside the tank when i got gas but it was never alot.what u can also do is bend the line from the charcol can that runs back to the tank, so it sits up on the firewall and put a breather on it.this will act as a vent

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
Is there any kind of special vented cap that I need to get, or will a generic from any parts store be fine?
What would I do with the two vaccum lines that go to the rest of the vaccum system, i.e EGR, FPR vaccum lines. Do I just plug these two or tie these two lines together to get good vaccum flow?

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
If you plug the fuel pressure regulator line, how is your regulator gonna work? Your regulator will default to max fuel pressure because it will think that you are at full throttle. That line should be hooked to manifold vacuum.
Your EGR line should be capped at the intake and the excess removed.

I already make plates for the EGR stuff with gaskets.
I am talking about the two vaccum lines that run from the canister to the rest of the vaccum system. Do I just cap those or have to do anything else to them?

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
You should be able to remove them and cap the fittings where they go to the engine.

Re: Cleaning out the engine bay
Now that I am looking around at what else I can do, it there anyone who has moved the coil to the firewall? And anyone know of any valve cover breathers that will clear the MIM?
