timing chain marks

Installed replacment engine and car runs like crap. I swaped timing chain prior to install engine. But I had crank at 12 oclock and cam at 6 oclock # 1 TDC. My manual says it should be 12 oclock crank and 12 oclock cam number 1 tdc is this right?? Also cam gear only ahs one mark looks like a pont with a I

Timing mark changed on distributor after car ran like crap. I pulled distibutor and redroped it in. Again pointed to # 1 on distributor cap.

Just pulled valve cover off old motor and both valves look to be closed with pointed on cam wheel at cam at 6 oclock and crank at 12 oclock

Re: timing chain marks

Sounds like you are 180 degrees out on timing. Try swapping your wires to correct the problem.

Follow the firing order.

Re: timing chain marks

I replaced the timing chain and gears. Marks were aligned at 6:00 cam and tweleve oclock crank. TDC number one. Held a peice of tissue over hole when it blew out should be tdc #1 .

marks are at 12 oclock cam and 12:00 crank. DOes this sound right?? If I am 180 out what wires should I swap?? I am leaning towards 1 and 4

Thanks for all the help

Re: timing chain marks

Your firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6

Your passenger side cylinders are 1-3-5 from the radiator first

Your driver's side cylinders are 2-4-6 from the radiator first.

Switch 1-4, 2-5, 3-6

If you are 180 degrees out this will put you close and then you can set the timing to perfection. You can also pull the distributor and re-stab it.

Removing and re-installing the distributor is the best and puts you back to factory spec.
