Computer good or bad?

I had my car running the other day and when it was running it spit out a code. I went out today to see if I could get it to start up but it wouldn't. It would try to but never start. So I thought I would try to find out what code it was and when I jumpered the ecu it didn't do anything. Usually the fans will come on and the check engine light will flash. I did notice that the battery was weak cause I left the key in the on position, but it had enough to turn the motor over. Could the computer be bad?

If you want to know more please read "I get it to start everytime"

Re: Computer good or bad?

correction, I had the fuel pump fuse out, so I think. When I put it back in then I jumped it and it ran the code retrievel. It didn't have any stored codes. I didn't have it out when I was trying to start the car.

What are the two fuses by the battery? I know one is for th fuel pump but what is the other?

would a cpu out of a 3.1 work? My friend has 91 w/3.1 in it and it runs. We just wanted to pull his out and see if my would do anything different.

Re: Computer good or bad?

The 3.1 is MAP not MAF like the 2.8, that is the only thing that would really keep it from working.

Re: Computer good or bad?

MAP=Mass Air Pressure
MAF=Mass Aif Flow
one measures the pressure vs the flow

I guess that it could start the car but the motor will run rough without the correct sensor.

Re: Computer good or bad?

It sounds like you disconnected the power wire to the ECM. An orange wire that comes from the battery? If so that would explain the check engine light coming on, but with no stored codes.

Re: Computer good or bad?

The only time I would pull the fuse is so it would stop pumping fuel to the injectors when I was testing compression etc. Does it hurt the coil for it to be sparking with no were to go? I kinda forgot to dissconnect the spark when I was trying all this.

If I use a spark tester what should I be looking for? I would assume that it would be a strong spark inside the tester.

What would it indicate if 1 out of 6 plugs looked black and dry and the others are wet. To me it would indicate that it was only sparking on that cyl. What the hell do I have to do to get it to spark on all the plugs? If it would I bet it would run just fine.

Re: Computer good or bad?

It's running great. I havent' drove it yet but I will believe me. I put new autolite plugs in it and she fired up, I had to rev it up until it smooothed out and then she idles great.

I am getting a code 42,
42. Fault at electronic spark timing circuit OR Fault at direct ignition system OR Fault at fuel cutoff relay circuit

What does this mean?
