stalling out
i recently bought an 85 firebird. 2.8 6cyl manual tranny. every once in a while i'll be driving down the road and when the rpms get to about 1k or so the car stalls on me. this is a little annoying and im not sure what it could be. a fuel problem maybe but the person i bought the car from says she had a new filter put on it and pump. she did say the battery was low but im not thinking that this would cause that problem. the car starts right up without any problems after it stalls. any information leading to saolving this problem would be great. thanks

Re: stalling out
i think i figured it out! im thinking maybe the idle is too low. and maybe my throttle spring is bad and i need to replace it. or maybe the entire throttle body. any advice on this would be helpful. what is a 2.8 with a manual tranny suppose to idle at does anyone know?

Re: stalling out
Check Vacuume lines, All normal Tuneup items, check connectors for loose/broken ones.
The idle on these cars is controlled by the ECU via the IAC (Idle Air Control), if you have a vac leak the IAC can not compesate for the air leaking into the system so the car will either Idle high or not at all. If you touch the Idle screw you will just make it worse.
If its stalling when your driving i would also check the coil. mine would die randomly till i changed it, tho once i had replaced it i ran into the clips holding the connection did not want to hold. so i had to replace them cause the would come loose.

Re: stalling out
I couuld be totally off here but when I had my v6 it had similar problems. The mechanic I took it to said look at this, he tapped the mass air flow sensor (kinda like knocking on a door (with your hand) and the car stumbled and died. So give that a shot. It's an easy way to know if it's good or not.

Re: stalling out
A good rule of thumb I've always been told: Don't touch the idle setting.
