TPS Woes

So I finally got my car running half-way decent a few days ago but the idle was still way too high. Tonight I went out to lower it some, and had it in the ballpark of where it needs to be (though it's hard to tell with a busted tach and no exhaust) by adjusting the stop-screw thing on the TB. Afterwards I figured backing off on the screw would require the TPS to be readjusted. That's when things went south. I had done it before so I'm fairly familiar with the process, only this time it just would not go anywhere near the .54v that it needs to be. The lowest I could get was .89v or so, and even with the TPS completely removed from the TB so there's no tension on it, it reads ~.88v. At that point I said screw it and decided to try and put it back where it was, because at least it was running before. It didn't work out so well, because now the car won't start at all.

My first instinct is to say something is wrong with the TPS but it's only a couple months old (bought new from Advance Auto) and it's not throwing any codes. Anyone have an idea?

Re: TPS Woes

Sounds like it is busted to me. I remember that I coudn't get the one I have now to set right. I ended up wrapping that little tab with some duct tape to that the right reading would be achieved and it works like a charm now.

Re: TPS Woes

Dammit. That's what I was afraid of. I wonder if I would be better off getting another from AutoZone or just grabbing a few from the junk yard.

Re: TPS Woes

You could just try a bunch from the junkyard. It never hurts to see if one will work or not.

Re: TPS Woes

I got to digging through my spare parts and found another TPS that I acquired from the junk yard a while back. Hooked it up and it works great.

I guess sometimes being a packrat pays off.

"Sometimes" is an understatement when dealing with these cars.
