Something fell into the engine, need ideas

I just want to start off and say that I'm an idiot. My car has been leaking fuel from the fuel line going into the fuel rail, so today I decide to fix it by replacing the O-ring. Well just to make sure I discharge the fuel pressure, but I sat the cap down on the lower plenum (where it meets the upper plenum, yes by the big gaping hole that leads into the engine). Well I forgot about it, and went on working, and I knocked it off INTO the damn engine . I pretty much wanted to shoot myself. I looked into the port, and it was nowhere to be seen, so my guess is that its either in the intake manifold, or at the valve. My question to you is have any of you had any experience getting something like this out of where I got it? Its plastic (so no magnet) but has (if I recall correctly) brass threads (were gold) so I cant just leave it in there to melt when she fires up. First thing I'm going to try is with a vacuum, creating suction on that port, and if that doesn't work, tape a fuel line to the vacuum, and try my luck fishing it out with the flexible vacuum line. I am open to suggestions, and yes I know I'm retarded.

you can buy the little magnets that have the wire you can bend. I would try that first.

Problem is that its a plastic cap, and possibly brass threads (or something in there was gold).

Can you get one of those "three-fingered" claws in there (plus a flash-light) to find and take it out? Other than that, you may have to pull the head on that side.

Might be worth a try to wrap duct tape backwards around something you can get in there. I have saved myself a tear down more than once this way.

I would try to get it out without tearing into the motor first. If you can't get it out then your going to have to dig into the motor.

Re: Something fell into the engine, need ideas

why not use a vacuum cleaner? Just use the smallest skinniest extension, then attach like a smaller pipe on it to increse the suction, then stick it down there and bring it up?

Re: Something fell into the engine, need ideas

i vote for the claw thing. i dropped a bolt down the same place once. I believe it was the runner for #5. that was fun cause it fell down to the valve or seemed to have.

Re: Something fell into the engine, need ideas

Well I tryed the vacuum thing like I said I was going to, and that didn't work. Next step is to remove the lower plenum and hope that I can see it there and get it. The claw thing won't work at this point because of the sevear angle. Thanks for the suggestions, and please post if you think of any more !

Re: Something fell into the engine, need ideas

The claw that I have is flexible - like a plumbing snake. That style should do the trick.

Best regards,

Gary.

Re: Something fell into the engine, need ideas

Well what I ended up doing was removing the lower plenum, and was able to get a claw to it to get it out. The damn thing was sitting right next to the valve. Shes all put back together now and runs like a champ.
