Missing line to carburetor!? plz help
Missing line to carburetor!? plz help
I just recently bought an 83 camaro and it has some carburetor problems, it doesnt seem to get much gas when accelerating and sometimes sputters around 45 mph. I dont know very much about cars yet. However i did notice a part on the carburetor that didnt have a hose/line going to it. Can anyone tell me about it and if it is even supposed to have a hose going to it. (look at pic)
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
That's an odd-looking set-up. Doesn't look anything like my '82 or '86. Where was this car originally delivered?

You wouldn't still happen to have the original emissions diagram sticker in readable condition under the hood, would you? That would be your best place to start.
Something in the back of my brain tells me that NO vacuum line goes there (at least not on that pointing part sticking out in the photo), but that's just my gut reaction, not speaking from a point of technical certainty.

Look for the color-coded pictoral diagram of where the vacuum lines go from the carb/intake to all the various vacuum-operated bits. It's not a scale-diagram but if you look at it carefully it's basically laid out exactly like if you were looking at the motor.

Gads, my mistake. I thought you were talking about a V8.
Looks to me like the hose is attached from the side of the diaphragm. The end piece doesn't have anything attached to it.

Can you get a clearer, closer shot of that area? Perhaps with the air cleaner off?

ya the a/c doesnt have the belt hooked up. I think the previous owner took it off because the a/c needed freon and she thought it would be better if the belt was off.

The only difference it will make is the .07 HP it takes to turn the free-wheeling pulley. Of course, with a 2.8 V6, every little bit helps. . .
Anyway, go to www.partsamerica.com, search on FS1081. That's a weird looking pull-off, but the hose goes to the side, from your first picture it looks like it's attached. The piece sticking out the front is a spring or guide or something, but I don't believe anything hooks up to it.
It's been 8 years since I saw a 3rd gen V6 carb, and frankly, I didn't look that close at it even then.
I'll copy this to the V6 forum so they can confirm all this.

That looks like it might be a throttle return dashpot. If it is it is hooked to vacuum and slows the butterfly from flopping shut. Reduces emmisions. I have routed vacuum lines on those engines many times but it has been years. In fact out of all of them I did I did not find one to have the correct hose routing on it. It is a good idea to check all of the routing to the diagram. Everyone seems to decide to engineer their own vacuum system. It is a Varijet carb. You can probably do a search for it. It also might help if you post a picture of the vacuum diagram. It will make more sense as you identify the parts on the diagram. I suggest that you work through it and check all of your routing. Almost everyone I have done this for has orriginally came to me to get the carb built. I have rebuilt it, to have them tell me that is is still not running right. I have gone and rerouted the hoses to print and they tell me that their car has never ran so well and that their 2.8 was not as much of a dog as they thought it was. I remember looking at the first one very well I started chasing one of the hoses all over the engine compartment only to find that it connected back to itself in a big loop and the freind of mine still arguing that he didn't think the hose routing would make that much of a difference. It did.
