intake manifold cleaning

i got a truleo intake manifold and has slight rust, also it was painted by the previous owner.
What should i use to remove rust, i already asked about getting it hot tanked but the guy said it wouldnt do anything/much to the paint & rust basicaly only good to clean dirt/sludge.
all i ever found was take some steel wool to it,sand paper, or light soap and sponge??? need some help i did look at other places to maybe put this thread but other area was for body parts.
Thank you for your advise

Re: intake manifold cleaning

Was this the one from the guy on FTV6, if so the intake sat in a JY for who knows how long. The best that you can do for the rust is sand it down as much as possible without gouging the metal then get some paint. Get Krylon "rust tough enamel" Its supposed to protect against future rust but it is also supposed to turn the current rust into something else on the surfice. Good stuff. Then just hit it with some high temp paint.

Re: intake manifold cleaning

i would say a jet washer but i recommend if you can find one get a soda blaster. thats what i did with my manifold and it cam out looking brand new! it took all the rust and grime and paint off.

Re: intake manifold cleaning

you can wire wheel it lightly, depending on how bad the rust is, then sand it to smooth it, prime and paint it.

Re: intake manifold cleaning

Truleo intake is not all that it cracks up to be, but is far better than the stock item.

91rss, bead blasting is the best option. If you don't have the money to take it somewhere to have done, Harbor Freight sells a nice little spot blaster that would be perfect for one/few time use. IIRC it was about ~$20-30 and has a small pint-sized or so "hopper" on it to hold the sand/media and hooks to an air compressor.

Be sure to show us how it turns out
