Hello, i have an 88 2.8 5 speed manual, i previously have only had auto bird/tas. so i was just wondering how my box 'should' feel. at the moment its a slow affair - i cant rush it. it dosnt crunch or anything and 'drops' in eventually just feels reluctant sometimes. i relize its no jap flick the wrist stuff. just wondered what peoples experiences are????????

Re: lets talk transmisions................

Probably oughta ask the Transmission forum folks, since this isn't v6-specific.

Doubtful. It's been rare that I've seen a stock T5 v6. I think there's probably way more v8 T5s out there.

Re: lets talk transmisions................

When it's in good shape, it should shift fairly easy. Unfortunately the V6 cars had even weaker transmissions than the V8 car. I bought an 86 Trans Am T5 to put behind my V6 and I think that was the best move.

What oil are you running in yours? It's supposed to be ATF, and if you run light gear oil in it you won't be able to shift easily. I have done okay with straight 20w engine oil, too. Once you get to 30w and beyond, it gets progressively more stiff when you try to shift until the oil is really hot. Then it shifts fine.

ATF, my cousin tried to talk me in to buying Synchro Mesh, but the price of Quaker State ATF completely changed my mind.

Re: lets talk transmisions................

hi, thats all very interesting, so you rekon dump the standard oil and find thicker?
i would have thought a t5 is a t5 wether its in a v6 or v8 they shouldnt be any stronger or weaker between cars surely???

They have different input splines, different gears(I think), and a whole mess of other differences.

Keep using ATF, it lubricates the bearings better. Atleast, thats what I was told when I asked a similiar question.
