2.8 T/A Wire Question, Formerly 2.8 Timing Chain Alignment

I'm still working on getting this car started, been over a year now, and still I cant get this engine to start up, I've only driven this T/A once, home from the guys house I bought it from, next morning, I went to crank it up, and it shot a rod...I replaced the engine with a SDPC 2.8 performer crate, and its never started since. Its got new everything, from ECM to injectors, emissions to sensors...

I've finally decided to pull out the engine, tear it down and rebuild it from scratch. I started wondering if the I had correctly aligned the timing marks, but even when I went to ask someone at Autozone, but no one knew, and their computer was way too vague..

How do I align the marks on the timng gears, I know that the one on the crank gear has the dot sraight up, marking tdc, but wear does the cam gear go, dot on the bottom or top?

For those of you that noticed that this is a TA, it really is a TA, original owner swapped out the 305 TPI for the 2.8 MPFI that I got it with.

VIN # proves it: 1 G 2 F W 8 7 S 8 G N

Re: 2.8 T/A Timing Chain Alignment

I love the fact that someone actually put a 2.8 into a Trans Am, the guy was definitely on something..

Anyway, back to topic!

My manual says to put the #1 piston at TDC with the marks on the camshaft sprocket at 6 o'clock and the crankshaft sprocket at 12 o'clock. Make sure the #1 cylinder is on compression with both valves closed.

Hope this helps. Oh, and before you tear the whole world apart, didn't your crate engine come with the cam installed? CHECK EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE YOU TEAR IT APART!

Good luck!

The cam was installed but the chain and gears were sperate...
Thats the way I had it, so that wasn't keeping it from running...

Re: 2.8 T/A Timing Chain Alignment

Okay, Ive been looking at the wiring with out the engine in the car, and I found a wire I've never seen before, its red with a small opening, looks like it fits the start terminal, its way too small to fit the battery side on the solenoid. It comes from the wiring block on the front right of the car, near the radiator support. If I could find a camera I'd post a picture. maybe someone will know what I'm talking about.

Re: 2.8 T/A Timing Chain Alignment

hi, im running into the same problem, but my book says its supposed to be tdc on #4 cylinder on the power stroke, mine spun its timing, shut it off and it never started again, will kick so hard and it wants to run, replaced timing chain/sprockets, rotor cap and button, new MAF sensor new ignition module, but i think im still off a tooth..

You can put the cam gear dot at either the top or the bottom, the result will be the same.
