which solid cam and lifter Q

looking at crane solid 250801 or 251241 ????? just wondering if 660 lifters are the same as small block lifters ???? just cause there easier for me to get hold of.
oh yeah what valve springs do you guys use for big lift?

They're not the same lifters, but the sbc lifters do fit. Might need to have custom pushrods made to correct geometry, but I doubt it. The popular choice right now is LS1 'beehive' springs, they're good to .550" lift but the limit is the heads. You'll need to have the valve guides machined to get any significant lift out of them. The 250801 is the better choice for a mostly stock engine.

Re: which solid cam and lifter Q

hi, thanks. i dont know anything about springs yet, so gm v8 springs fit then. being off the shelf OE i guess there quite cheap eh?? instead of branded??
looking at the max lift figures and the lift you want, how far would you 'push' the springs to there limit??????

You can get used LS1 springs super cheap but I'd never put them on my motor, I always buy new springs. Comp makes beehive springs and retainers or you can use oem parts. Like I said before the limit isn't the springs it's the heads- too much lift and you'll contact the valve guide. The limit on the stock heads is .450"(?) or so. As far as the limit of the beehive springs themselves the listed limit is usually the max you can safely push it without getting coil bind.

Not true. The yellow LS6 spring I used coil bound at .5613" lift on 3x00 head using LS1 spring seats/shims. .525" is the safest max lift, people have gone as much as .560" with thinner shims, but I wouldn't trust it - you ever seen a spring in action?

There are a few different ones. They have different colors to denote what ones they are. I used the yellow LS6 springs because they have the most travel and stiffness.

You can get them for about $65-80 new for a set of 16, but I think you can get them directly from GM one at a time.

Ben at 60*V6 did a test on the various LSx springs for seat pressure and max lift, but the site is down right now.
