FPR?? Please Help! (VIDEO ADDED)

I have a tapping/knocking sound coming from what sounds/feels like the intake area. This has been going on for a few weeks, but the car was in the garage for the last week because I tore it down to get new injectors, wires, plugs, dis cap/rotor, and ended up painting the valve covers and the intake upper/lower sections. I also adjusted the valve bolt things to what the Haynes manual says to do (turn the valve and tighten just until there is resistance). But it did make this sound before I did that... it's just louder all of a sudden.
So yesterday I put everything back together and today I got my timing down. It was still making the tapping sound, but this time when I went to accelerate faster it sounded like a pebble was flying all around inside the intake. Then when I let off the gas, the engine cut off. Started it back up after a few tires and I got it back to the house. Left it running and then just barely tapped the throttle from under the hood and it almost stalled but then caught itself. I did it a little harder and it shut down. But I re-timed the best I could and it no longer stalls... just that loud annoying noise.
My nerves are shot from dealing with this- thank you in advance!

If your sure that you don't have a lifter noise, then it definitly sounds like a rod to me...
Personally, I don't think it's a collapsed lifter, I think you got a rod bearing that's gone bad.

I think that you have a rod knocking. Sounds way to loud to be a ticking lifter to me.

Re: FPR?? Please Help!
pull the heads,if it didnt knock before the u had the intake off chances are u droped a nut/bolt something down the intake,my friend did this on one of his cars.we thought it had a rod knock, pulled the pan and bearings and they were all good,so we said hell with it and pulled the heads, low and behold was a 5/16's nut in one of the cyls sounded just liek a rod gone bad
edit
nm i see were u say it made the noise before u pulled the intake apart

Re: FPR?? Please Help!
I don't quite think it's rod knock....my engine had a real bad knock when I first bought it....here's a video...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kzN8JTmVDTU
I had to get a whole new crank in order to fix that. Yep, it was that bad...wasn't just the bearings.
Compare that to your video and it doesn't seem to match up...
did the noise appear slowly and eventually get worst and worst?
It might be rod knock, but I wouldn't say it is for sure just yet...

Yes, Xoferif, it matches up almost exactly in my opinion. Sh*t. Looks like I'll have to get a rebuilt... or try to sell this for the $1000 I paid for it, lol. Only 63k original miles, so sad.
*edit* actually it dosent seem to match up after a few plays. Mine is a lot more high-pitched... I might mess with the valves before I scrape up money I don't have for a rebuild. After I checked them, I was a little unsure of myself and thinking I should tighten them a little more, but just let it go. Wishful thinking.
----------
Project 89: It did have this before hand, but it was not nearly as loud. It only got this loud today when I stomped the pedal... went from the regular tap/knock sound to a full out knock instantly.

Re: FPR?? Please Help!
So another question: how much of this can I do in my garage withOUT pulling the engine? My cash supply is... a credit card that's 40% maxed already.

Re: FPR?? Please Help!
Rod bearing is slower than that - this will make a bit of a mess, but try
to narrow it down to the side the noise is coming from, pull the valve
cover from that side and while it is idling, push down on each rocker arm and see if you can find out where it's coming from. It really sounds like something is loose inside the valve cover or inside the cylinder

dodger65: It goes from horrible to frightning.
Yes, it has to be the rod. I tried what Tookie said, but it was all in vain. The car I fell in love for the shot 2 months of my ownership is now on it's death bed. I can't deal with it anymore, so I will be putting an AD in the TAMPA BAY AREA Craigslist to sell for $1,100 OBO if anyone is interested in a project, lol. If it is not gone in 2 weeks, I will be parting it out and junking whatever's left. I'll post a classified add here on ThirdGen.org if/when that time comes.
THANK YOU ALL for helping me out- I hope I will one day return. Take care, and keep the third generation alive.

Re: FPR?? Please Help!
Sounds exactly like a loose wrist pin to me, especially with how the frequency instantly changes to much faster as soon as you touch the throttle. Those take forever to get to the point where they'll actually cause damage. I've got one going out on my car and been driving on it for the last 30k miles with nothing more than an annoying noise just like yours (mine isn't quite as loud though). If it were me, I'd keep the car and save up for some new higher compression pistons and then replace the bad wrist pin while you're in there. You'll get more power and solve the problem at the same time.
