Re: how to check iac ?

I think the reason you didnt get much replies is because..to check it ,you need a scanner that has the IAC testing feature.I bought a noid light to check it, but didnt realize I needed a scanner to use it.My Auto X-ray doesnt have this feature.Only other way is to put a scanner on it and watch the IAC counts.I would try a good one or known good one and see if it changes..

Re: how to check iac ?

One thing that you can do is:

Short pins A & B together on the ALDL connector.

Then key-on, engine-off

The IAC will be continuously commanded to close. Usually you can feel the IAC body for it clicking. Not sure on that TB if you can see the IAC pintle. If you can it will fully extend and close off the orifice.

Warning: if you do this with the IAC removed from the TB the pintle will become fully unthreaded from the IAC. And if not retained shoots across the garage and finds the darkest, dusty-est corner to hide in.

To thread the pintle back in, reverse a pair of the IAC connector wires (usually color coded with the same main color and a different stripe color). And repeat the above.

Yes, same pins as used to pull the codes.

Cool never knew that..I did have a pintle come off and it stuck inside the orifice in the TB..that was the only code I have ever had on my car.I removed it and took it back to the auto store cause I didnt like it as the tip screwed on and off and bought a Delco or Dephi brand(been awhile) it didnt screw on or off the shaft.Yeah you can remove the top cover off the TB on the V6 and probably watch it from there.

Re: how to check iac ?

My 86 does the same thing. I have disassembled and completely cleaned the IAC motor and pintle assembly, but with no avail... Small vacuum leak somewhere perhaps? One of these days, I'll get around to just changing out the IAC and see what happens...

If you can't feel the IAC "clicking", does that mean it is bad?
