Automatic engine-Manual transmission?
I'm looking at getting a new 2.8L engine. Problem is that the dealer only shows automatic engine available and I have a manual transmission.
Aren't these engines the same? I would just need to replace the flywheel and such to make it work...
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
-Artie

Automatic Engine? The only thing that can be auto or manual is the choke and the tranny lol. Flexplate of flywheel dictates what the motor will work with. And some other details.

Re: Automatic engine-Manual transmission?
attached picture shows a difference in the engine block itself.
1989 "automatic" 2.8l does not have this tapped hole.
1988 "manual" 2.8l does.
I need the "manual" version.

Re: Automatic engine-Manual transmission?
the only thing I can think of for the threaded hole would be for vehicles w/clutch fork, the pivot ball would screw into it. I remember reading about it in the gmpp catalog under the 3.4 hi-torque engine.

the clutch fork on an 89 is attched in side the bellhousing. clutch cylender bolts right up

Re: Automatic engine-Manual transmission?
The engines are identical. That hole is unnecessary. The 3.1 in my car was originally set up for a manual, I think, and was put into my 87 which HAD an auto. Neither trans uses that hole. You will need to get the proper flywheel for the 2.8, since most 2.8s were externally balanced. I believe there was a changeover year to internal balance, but I am not sure of the year... Could have been 89, not sure. And don't forget to buy a NEW clutch kit... might as well replace it while everything's apart. That way you have the pilot bearing as well as a new pressure plate and clutch...
