3.1l to 3500 swap

Instead of doing the hybrid setup between a 3.4l and a 3500, is it possible to take the transverse 3500 out of the newer FWD cars and swap in into our RWD cars. I know certain things would not line right up, such as the intake, exhaust, starter, and engine mounts, but is it still possible. I know some of the gen 1 FWD blocks had starter bosses for RWD cars that weren't tapped, but do the 3500's have them as well. Also, can the intake on the 3500 be reversed without any machining or moving of hoses so that the TB faces the front. Exhaust would be easy, but the engine mounts might be a little trickier. Finally, will all of the accessories mount up without special brackets being made.

Re: 3.1l to 3500 swap

Mounts will be all custom. The mount pads are even different between the 3400 and 3500.

Starter can't be mounted on the passenger side, there's not enough material in this area of the block to make it work, nor does any FWD block, they have all been "shaved" to clear the FWD automatic tranny housings. The swap usually involves going from longitudal mount to transverse, and that is generally the F-body 3.4 into the Fieros.

Yes, the intake can be turned around, but the front cover will need to be changed to the RWD front cover and water pump, along with other pulleys and belt driven accessories. The FWD front cover does not allow easy modification to turn the intake around, due to the "rear" or passenger side water inlet passing over the timing chain cover area. This is the same area that the thermostat housing will want to occupy with the intake turned around.

You will also need to use an aftermarket crank trigger since the 3500 crank reluctor wheel uses some weird 52x sensor that doesn't give a usuable output to be used with the older and easier to use genII/III (and F-body 3.4) DIS ignition system. This will likely need to be custom, since there isn't an off the shelf 6+1 (AKA 7x) aftermarket reluctor wheel that will fit with the RWD pulleys. I have one that was made by my grandfather when I used a genI 2.8 blick with genIII top end in my Jimmy, worked VERY well.

The 3.4/3500 swap would be the best bet.
But anything is possible...it just depends on how much time and money you want to put into it.

Re: 3.1l to 3500 swap

This is true, but at this point it almost sounds easier to go with the whole hybrid prospect
----------
A definitive guide to the whole 3.4-3500 hybrid should be made and designated as a sticky, because with the horrible search function it sure does make it hard to gather all the info
