A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

Since i still get numerous pm's and questions about my original setup, parts used what it ran etc i figured id do this post from the very first motor up until the current state as of today.

along with that i ill update this as i run the car this race season in search of my first 11 and 10 second timeslips

first some background on the car

the car was purchased 4 almost 5 years ago as a base model 89 rs
paid 800 bucks for the car not running.
car dealer stated it needed a fuel pump, which it turns out the fp was fine and it needed an ignition module.

we toyed with the car and did the simple things like ex system advance the timming, ram air mod, and ran the car just for the hell of it.

results were in the mid 17 second range n/a with the 2.8
the car stayed this way for about 2 years

after that came the first turbo motor. complete down to the diy junkyard aproach.

this first turbo system utilized the factory manifolds using a custom modified y pipe and a 2.5 inch downpipe under the k member.

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

for the most part the car stayed like this for just about a year. stock ecm with 24# injectors running 6-9psi on the street.

some were during this time i picked up a tci 3,500 stall, installed the 1le suspension, drag shocks, a fmu, a 260 cam and ported heads

opps i forgot about the cowl hood

somewere in this time line the car pulled out some high 12second passes at 18 psi but was short lived due to the inability to tune the motor at the time. the original motor spun a rod bearing somewere around 150-160k miles

a junk yard motor was bought and droped inplace of the 2.8. this motor was supposed to be a 3.1 but we later found out down the road it was infact a 2.8(more on this later)
car looks liek this at this current stage

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

the next race season the crappy kink bed charge pipes were swaped out for mandrel bent tubing. 2.5 inch from the turbo to the intercooler, and 3 inch from the intercooler to the tb

a few more minor changes were made but i cant recall what they all were.

i know we broke 2 flexplates and burnt up a few transmissions

but the biggest mod for this season was the instalation of a megasquirt engine management system

the car was brought back to the track shortly after but never made any clean passes, just a few launches and 300 ft runs due to some over sights on the install of the ms and not fully understanding how to tune the car.

edit
to add onto this we did get the car tuned slightly and made one single run at 5 psi which i believe was a measly 15.0,and my daughter was born a few days later so the car got put on hold

i do have some videos of this i will come back and edit this post when i get them uploaded to youtube or streetfire

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

the car basically sat unused or touched for a full year, which brings us to the current point.

lots of changes and mods to the car this year.

first off the stock jy motor was pulled and ripped down. this motor was hurt during the previous year due to be started with no oil,at this point the motor only made 5 psi oil presure @ idle and 25-30 psi at redline

heres pics of the aftermath of the stock 2.8

the rods and block were saved, the pistons heads/cam were all trashed.
this time around i started with a 3.1 out of a 92 camaro with 40k on the clock

motor was left a std bore with just a hone job to remove any cyl wall glaze
stock 3.1 crank and rods, rods were resized and had arp bolts installed.
keithblack hyer pistons were fitted to the rods and the rotating assembly was high speed balanced.

a custom 268/272 on 115lsa cam was installed.to go along with the cam a set of massivley ported iron heads, and a port matched lower intake.
the mid and upper sections were also ported heavily

and thats pretty much the basis of the current motor.

the original turbo system was tossed in favor of a foward facing header setup with a front mounted crossover.

this setup reused the ebay wastegate ,52 mm t3/t4 turbo and bov and volvo intercooler

the headers were home fabed using 316L and 321 stainaless.
1/4 inch thick stainless flanges with 1.5 inch .065 wall stainless primarys, to a 3 inch to 2.5 inch reducer collector

to keep costs down the crossover was made from heavy wall mild steel tubing

some more changes to follw this year is having the converter gone threw and freshened, and also the auburn posi in replaced by a welded open rear making it into a spool. the 28x9 slicks are swaped in favor of an 28x10 slick for this season

first time out id low boost testing with my daughters mom driving this is just out to tune the car. still no wideband and timming is locked to 12* total
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c0JsG2oL0g
car runs a mid 14 on 6 psi letting out around the 1000 foot mark

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

next time out again 6psi 12* of timming, and my daughters mom driving
no slicks easy launch car pulls off a 14.01
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/tunning-session-number-2_162838.htm
cars still way rich

edit

i forgot about one run car breaks 13's on 6 psi
Name: 0824081732.jpg

end of edit

at this point the car gets 4 new mods an rising rate fuel presure regulator(previously i ran a constant 55psi) larger injectors ,dual intank walboro 255 lph pumps, and a wideband o2 sensor, and is imediatly brought back to the track

this time the car is brought back on the slicks and 9psi of boost, still locked out timing at 12* and pump gas

first run the car goes a 1.94 60 foot leaving the line with a pound or 2 of boost and pulls out a 13.4@ 101. The wideband showed a reading of 10.0 afrs the entire run so some fuel was pulled for the second pass

second run othe rthen the fueling changes everythign else is the same as run one

car pulls out a 1.83 60 ft and a 13.00@104.65
wideband still shows the car rich with 10.7-11.0 afrs.we pulled some more fuel out but never got the chance to make our third run. had we goten our third run in the car should have gone in the 12.7 range with no other changes. and possibly as low as 12.5 had it come up on boost out of the hole.
but unfortunatly we wouldnt get the chance, the 13.00 marked the end of the race season for the car
video of the last runs can be seen here

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

so that brings us to the comming race season and i have a few changes planned for the car this year.

first up is a custom 4 inch thick fmic core that going in
second i now have 2 injectors per cyl (was cheaper then buying a set of 60 pound injectors)
third the ebay 52mm turbo had its coldside upgraded it now has a 67mm to4z/r wheel and compressor housing
and the final mod is alky injection

sometime this comming week were are hoping to tune the car for anywere from 25-32 pounds of boost. so stay tuned and see what happenes

this should be one hell of a race season with many records to break or many broken parts lmao

subscribed! Great info and nice to have pics too.

At the bottom of post 5, what are those valve covers?

Also, for that much boost, wouldn't you need forged pistons? Do you know how much stock and aftermarket hypereutectic ones are good for?

the valve covers are just stock, some cars had silver valve covers, and some had gold valve covers.

the pistons should be fine at high boost as long as the motor does not detonate.the tune really has to be spot on.i could run race gas but im trying to kepe this build strictly on pump has 93 octane.the alky injection should do the trick.

i know a few gn guys and a certain dodge k car comes to mind these guys have run upwards of 30 psi on hyperectic pistons.but like i said if the tune isnt on and it detonates even a lil bit on those high boost levels the pistions will end up looking liek a ball of crumpled tin foil

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

Odd, my valve covers are black....

I guess I'll be going forged then, as I only want to build it once.

So 24 lb/hr are good for 13 flat? That is what I'll be aiming for.
Custom chip, or stock pcm?
Were the killed transmissions stock?

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

i would go with 36.6# injectors and a 1.1 rrfpr will leave u a lil room to be safe
i ditched the stock pcm for a megasquirt standalone very cheap very capable units.
311$'s shiped to ur door ready to be installed or as low as 150 bucks if u build it urself.
megasquirt.info

part of the transmissions that died was i was using an s-10 converter while these are higher then stock stall converters they are weak.

a good rebuild + good quality shiftkit i.e transgo and u should have no problems with the trans

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

wasnt gonna update this till i take some videos but what the hell

28psi is a go few quick test pulls are showing that the motor will infact hold the boost though its very hard to get a good test run in second gear, cause the tires just go up in smoke.

ive converted to a staged injection system
!st stage of injectors run the car from idle till 10 psi with the second bank of injectors comming on at 11 psi. i do belive im going to change this to a much lower boost number as the mixture gets way to rich for a split second when the secondary injectors start to open. as i cant get the pulse width on the secondary injectors low enough

so if i bring them in earlier i can cut back the pulse width on the primary set of injectors and it should be a lil smoother

alky injection system needs work i only have a non adjustable setup,i.e on /off , so ill be looking into getting a progressive controller for the alky injection

and the thing i am most happy about is i found a manual tranbrake that will work with our 700r4 transmissions

by manual transbrake i mean there is no electronic soliniod to mount to the trans case. the valve used for this brake installs in the valve body were the gear selector valve is. when u put the gear lever into 1st gear it locks the trans into 1st and reverse. to release the brake u shift into 2nd or drive

of course this means my suspension needs a complete over haul cause theres no way in hell im going to hook comming off a trans brake at 14+ psi

im also ditching my 4:10 gears for a set of 4:56s gears, this will bring my top speed down to 133mph but will get my rpms up into my power band up on the top end of the track. 133mph is more then enough to go 10.20 so im not worried about running out of gear

looks like the car will finally get dynoed.

the admin of another site has offered to pay to have my car dynoed
right now this is a good posibility but nothing is set in stone as of yet
ill be looking to put down 450+ whp i hope neways

the plan looks like it will be to dyno the car @ 28 psi on a mustang dyno
ill keep this updated as i get more information

Yes Ben at WOT-TECH.com is paying for the dyno (he also owns 60degreev6.com)

Are you going to run it full boost?

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

well folks its that time of year again the weather is getting warmer and its time to get back at it

the owner of another site has offered to pay to have my car dynoed.
this is now 100%
anyone local is welcome to come out and see/checkout the car and dyno pulls first hand

also on the list is a possible private track rental sometime in march or april to do some SERIOUS TESTING
this of course is possible due to a invitation from the guys over at the magna buick club to join them

this should be a really good year

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

Well, nice of those Buick guys to let you in on some of their fun, eh? LOL

Be sure to post your dyno stuff as soon as you get it. Interested parties like me are waiting patiently...

I plan on similar stuff to your setup, just with a Buick V6 under the hood instead. I am a believer in two mottos; first, "There's no replacement for displacement," and "Be original." I know I could get more cubes from a 4.3, but I'm not a follower of the bow tie so I can't go that route. I'll make due with a 3.8 or 4.1 Buick instead... I have also done plenty of V8 cars and it seems my V6 3rd gens have the best handling unless your V8 is made of aluminum. It's time for the turbo 6.

I think you do are doing an excellent job, so keep it up.

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

if its one thing ive learned from the buick guys is they have this **** down to a science

turbo, converter what works what dosent etc

ive been getting alot of help from a few of the buick guys, they have saved me from a few costly mistakes

but its all finally comming together now

besdies when u can impress the gn guys u know ur doing something right lmao

one thing alot of ppl dont relize is these guys go into the 9's and 10's with stock ported heads. that same cyl head stock vs stock for our heads actually flow less

and even ported the gn heads are still a lil less flow/the same as ours.

they have the advantage of more cubes but we have the advantage of being able to turn our motors 2k+ more rpms

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

im steping down my turbo for the time being.

what i did is take a t3 turbo and bought a t67 cold side, i was told that it the cold side would support over 650 hp which it will.but we didnt relize how small the turbine wheel was we thought it was a stage 3 wheel.turns out after measuring it it was a std wheel. so that huge compressor wheel is severly limited by the ex side.

so i need to either upgrade the hotside to a stage 3/5 or i may just go with a prtim wheel

im holding off on it for the time being as im supposed to be getting a 60-1 turbo with a stage 3 .82 hotside. so if i get that that will go on the car. if not ill prolly hit the dyno with the ebay turbo

Re: A V6'S QUEST FOR AN 11&10 SECOND TIMESLIP: THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS

when things go bad !!!!!!!!!!

heres some old *** footage from when me and streetlethal installed my megasquirt.
the mega squirt was instaled liek the day before the car hit the track.i though it was ready boy was i wrong

due to some simple miswiring the car ended up with 40* ignition timming under full boost, sounded liek somone dumped a cam of marbles down the intake it was pinging so bad.

anyways the motor (completly stock) survived 2 attempted passes this night, though both runs were aborted once the car shifted into second gear
