Re: Am i nuts?

Id line them up with you after I put on a turbo system myself or a 383.
Your missing the point, again *sigh*

stock 6 vs stock 8 / 6's are 2 seconds slower GET THAT THROUGH YOUR FREAKING SKULL

This tread is based on stock cars, not heavily modified.

305 cars and the 3.1 cars are not 2 seconds apart either much closer to 1 second down to around .600

If your still in the same car on the threads you started, looks like you've gone deep into the motor.

The v6 is pretty different for modding like you did, but why not go with a motor that would show more gains per dollar ? like the 350?

From the pics it looks like you've dumped a few grand into that 6 cyl

Re: Am i nuts?

still in the same car, all in total ive got about 2,700 bucks with everything.

theres really nothing special about it, its a stock bottom end granted it dosent have factory pistons but they are el cheapo stock replacements.
besdies that its got some arp goodies but nothing i would consider aftermarket perfomance wise

ive owned 12 diff 3rdgens this was my first v6 and i wanted to keep it a v6,no other real reason then that

Re: Am i nuts?

Most ive done to my current engine was intake manifold, only cuz i broke the bolts off the water neck lol.

Your 6 would own my 305, when you took off the line I thought it was gonna be quicker then 13's. Is the bottom end safe for 27psi ?

Re: Am i nuts?

yeah we had issues on those runs car still isnt tuned right car should have run mid 12's.

well noone knows supposedly the block will break at 450 hp,i dont think it will so im going for broke with it.the motor is the cheapest part of my whole build so i really could care less.

should be able to get a few 10 second passes out of it though, i still have a dual nozzle wet nitrous shot on the car 35-150 hp ill prolly jet for 35 and use it out of the hole
and im swaping to a 3.4 dohc motor this year anyway

Re: Am i nuts?

ive never shot the car with nitrous while it was turbocharged, i was gonna try a 100 shot on 9 psi but i never got to do it, at 27 psi ill prolly spray it with a 35 shot just to help motivate the car out of the hole

Well when you get your 3.4 up give it a go since you got the replacement motor !!! If that block holds up, that would be insane.

Re: Am i nuts?

nice attempt to the back on topic... LOL

It looks like I will be on the lookout for a 88-92 (prefer 91-92) camaro with a V6 and a 5 speed. I want it in original condition and adult owned, and with those conditions I'm not going to reject it mo matter what engine it has in it.

T-tops and manual windows would be nice, but I'm not going reject a strong canditate on those factors. I would love a dark red one, but dark green is my second favorite color.

Re: Am i nuts?

As for insurance, I went from a v6 hardtop to a v8 vert and my insurance only changed 20bux every 6 months for full coverage. Not bad at all.

The 6/60's are mostly known for timing chain problems. So plan on replacing that when you get the thing. The 3.1's are known for digital EGR issues which is EXPENSIVE! But then the 2.8's have maf issues(not cheap). Other then that, these things are fairly reliable. I had a 3.1 with 210k miles and was running good but just started a knock. Which ended up being an out of round bore. The intakes suck taking apart the first few times. But once you know, its easy.

As for performance. The old 3.4l/t5, cam, and mild port work, STOCK tune IMO is/was faster then my current 350. The car was bare bones and had some weight mods ontop of that. I found out later it also had 2.73 gears

My current 350, TPI, fully loaded. It will rip the hell outta some tires, but once it goes, its only so-so (but it did beat a 5.3l truck last time I drove it).

I gave 900 for my 91 RS...it's the 3.1 automatic it has power locks and windows and hatch release, and t-tops...when I bought it the guy said it just needed a fuel pump so I got it and replaced the pump and guess what...it's still sitting in my driveway because I can't figure out what is wrong with it...I have spent hours scanning these forums and I cannot find out what is wrong with the stupid car...so my advice is get whatever but make sure you can drive it home!

Re: Am i nuts?

I have two 3.1

90 SSA I bought new - I've had one problem that I could figure out and ran out of time (It was my DD at the time). With 162K on the clock it still runs fine. I need to change out the rear freeze plugs Right now it looks like GTA...

I pickup a 92 Firebird Vert last summer.

I'm pleased with the motors

If I need a fast car I can take out the Vette

he says in his first post he's looking for an 88 - 92...so that's not it. Maybe it's to nice or to far away. He doesn't say where he lives. For 1300 I'd fly and drive for the right car. Maybe he wants a fixer upper......

Perhaps this more what he's looking for......

i like the gauge style of that year just fine...

It's the nitrous... a sure sign the car has been run hard and put away wet. I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole

Re: Am i nuts?

I was just about to edit my post again saying I'm sure it's the stupid nitros. Not something I would advertise having on my car if I were trying to sell it. Probably why it didn't sell when he was only asking $1300.... Then again for 1300 it still might be worth it. Run it till it dies than put whatever motor you want in it. Good project for you to do with your kid.

for that price... you're right, I'd buy it in a second if it was closer. Boston is a long way from dallas though.

I'm wondering why it didn't sell for $1300, but now it's $3000? something doesn't add up

Re: Am i nuts?

I own both, a 1989 Firebird hardtop 2.8 5 spd, and a 1991 Firebird T-top 5.0 TBI automatic. I have to say, the amount of trouble I've had with the 2.8, it doesn't owe me anything, but I find it easier to work on the 5.0 TBI just because it's what I'm used to. But, whatever floats your boat.

Re: Am i nuts?

Said he was broke and needed money for Christmas and the first 1300 takes it. Said if it didn't sell by Christmas that the 1300 was off the table and he was raising his price. Well I guess he raised his price. IMO if he would sell it then he'd sell it now for 1300. However I wouldn't wait till spring.... then you'll never get it for that price.

Re: Am i nuts?

gonna bump an old thread here to post a thought...

I'm still looking for a good camaro to buy, and I've been looking at both 305's and v6's. I'm a do it yourself kind of guy, and the v6 just seem so much more user friendly to work on. you can touch all of the spark plugs with your hands, and there's room to get tools down in the engine bay.

I don't know how much that's talked about here, but that's a HUGE plus for me. Much more important than a marginaly faster jump off the line, or even a little improvment in MPG

You can get a V6 and still have a fun project. Possibly put a 3.8L in it from a late '90s f-body. You will have much better fuel economy. It would just be a lot of work.

I had a v6 camaro n I wasn't impressed..at all..
Now I have a v8 gta n that car suprised me everyday =)

but yeah if u get a v6 it never gonna be of great alue u can completely restore it and it'll look nice but if u ever wanna sell it, chances are ur not gonna get anywhere near what u put into that car..now if you did that to a z28 or iroc-z it would be a much diffren story I've seen completely restored irocs on eBay go for 35xxx plus no lie!

Re: Am i nuts?

I've had a v6 camaro before. I'm not interested in speed. I'm 40 years old with a family, as long as it will get up to highway speeds, I'm happy

I'm with you about the cost/value factor. If I do this, I need to get a car that is a nice looking, good running car, or it's not worth it. I can't get a wreck and pour money into it

LOL, I've lined up against tbi 305's and spanked on them before, but my car's not stock either. Just the motor.

I get plenty of compliments on how it looks & sounds even with a 'raspy' 'lil v6.

Re: Am i nuts?

not to bring up a dead subject...but stock 305 tbi runs about 17 seconds...is rough trying to say that our v6s run 19? when my 0-60 is 9.8 stock? come on now....don't come into the lions den and start trouble.
