near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
living near buffalo, i havnt had my car on the road since nov. i go to where its stored and drive it sometimes with a dealer plate from where i work. now that the weather is breaking a little, i moved it from its storage place to my work as i plan on putting plates on it this week. so, i drive it all over town, just to let it run, and when i get back to work i pop the hood to look at the condition of my plug wires i'm thinking of changing (from reading posts on here) to my horror, i realized i've been driving all day with no oil cap on the engine!!!! they must not have put it on when i changed the oil to store it in nov. i've had this happen years ago in a different car, and it really made a mess of the engine, but on the camaro, not one drop of oil was anywhere to be found, and there's plenty still in the engine!!! not even any oil on the inside of the hood. is this an engine design, or did the camaro gods smile on me that day??? either way, its off to the parts store before i go to the dmv for plates - thats for sure

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
more of a camaro god thing for sure. but I don't think it would be too much oil loss anyway. I would be more worried about the oil getting contaminated, but its no big deal. my plug wires were falling apart on me last year, so I broke down and got some new ones, didn't notice a difference in performance, but now i don't worry about them falling apart.

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
thanks - i went to napa today and spent the extra 2 bucks to get the "mr gasket" one with crome on it instead of the plain rubber one. so now its even better - lol. i followed the link to your car, and i was wondering about that hood. is that an iroc hood with the scoops added to it, or is that how the hood comes on yours????
also, where does your oil gauge sit?? i noticed mine was really high. this may be a dumb question, but is it possible the cap got blown off???

BTW, saw you're from Lockport. Look us up at WNYFbody and on the NorthEast boards. Don't know if you know where it is, but I bought my baby in Medina.

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
my hood is an iroc hood from 90-92 i believe. the scoops it has stock. i wanted a new hood since mine had a bad crease from shutting it when it wasn't properly adjusted. so i found this one and fell in love with it.

you have the black hood "blisters?" those are really cool. I like mine though, looks more modern. keep those, it looks better than just a plain hood.

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
I don't have any pics that I know of, especially not recent ones (I've been kind of slacking in that area, with work and school, among other things
). The Bird is a little different from even those, with the red headlamp door and pass side mirror. BTW, there's a few good yards in Buffalo that have parts if you need any. 2060 Auto Parts is one in particular, and there is one I might let you in on if we get to hang out sometime. All I'll say is that it's just outside of Oakfield...

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
yep. thats my baby, and thanks. its not bad considering what she is.(yrs/miles) it was a tottal fluke how i got it, i was just in the right place at the right time. i wasn't really even shopping for a car at all. in fact, the day i got her, i woke up that morning having no idea i'd own a camaro by the end of the day - thats car sales for ya, its not glamourus, but it does have the ocassional perk.

but i still like your hood better!!!!! lol

but i still like your hood better!!!!! lol

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
I haven't been that close to Buffalo since I left Ohio back in '05. I've been wanting to get to the speedway, I just haven't had a chance. Maybe this summer if things hold out...
Anyways, you've got a nice clean car there. I wish mine had been that way (long story, you can search my posts for it if you'd like to know).

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
hey maverick - i started searching your posts, but there's like 20 pages of them, so i'm not too far in. as for lancaster, you should really try to make it out on a wed, its prob the biggest cruise night in wny, and to be able to run your car for only 5 bucks?? its a steal. especally when you consider that there's no charge at the gate on wed. i got pics from there on my myspace, my profile is myspace.com/superdanxlr8 but you'll have to send me an add to see the pics, i got my myspace set to private until a girl i used to date gives up and stops stalking my page!!!!

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
its a paved oval, but they have a drag lane also. i've never ran the camaro on it yet, maybe this year?? i want to have her as good as she's gonna get before i try it. i ran it in a little 4cyl hatchback once, just to check it out, and see how the starting tree thing all works. you got some great pics of the car on your myspace, way better than on here.

Re: near disaster, but didnt spill a drop
All the stock RWD 6/60 valve covers I have seen were double baffled, so it would be hard(but not impossible) for oil to find its way out.
Where you have to watch is the valve cover gaskets. The design of these heads and cover... the gasket has oil on them 24/7. One mistake and that suckers got oil everywhere.
