Horrible MPG
Horrible MPG
Hello could you guys put me in the right direction on what I should be doing about my 91 3.1 l bird getting between 7 to 10 mpg. before I got a new water pump, IAC, Spark plugs and wires, pcv valve, and o2 sensor the car was sluggish and seemed to be lacking power. I basicly got a full tune up. When I got the spark plugs and wires put in I drove the car and it drove better than ever for a couple weeks then went back to how it was. When I would drive the car I would get a egg smell sometimes and sometimes I could smell gas, but this was something that was not on a regular basis.I was told to put in some fuel injector cleaner in my car and when I did that it would make the gas smell go away. When I was in idle the car would either feel as if it was going to shut off and or did shut off. After this started happening I got the IAC put in and a K and N air filter and that helped with the idle problem somewhat. The mechanic hooked up something that tests the fuel pressure and he said it was fine. After getting the new spark plugs put in a couple months later when I got them checked the mechanic told me that they were very solied and dirty. I recenty checked my MPG just to see how it was doing since my mechanic had just worked on it, the odometer was at 77 miles and 10 gallons had been used!!!!!!!!!
Also my check egine light has never came on ever with all the problems I have had, it is making me think it maybe the ecm but I dont know about cars to well, and help would be greatly appriceated.

Re: Horrible MPG
Try getting a new mechanic. Your injectors need to be professionally cleaned as some are probably stuck open causing the plugs to foul out (since the K/N air filter, which lets more air into the mix, seemed to help AND your plugs are fouled). Also, it seems as though you should save some pennies for a new catalytic converter since that appears to be plugged or otherwise dead (that egg smell you described).
Your EGR valve may also be stuck open. Try cleaning that up.

I actually got a new catalyic converter and flowmaster exhaust put in a couple months ago it helped the car run better, but things went back south because so much fuel is still being wasted , what kind of place should i take it to get the injectors cleaned, and how much do u think it will cost
thanks

You can either go to a dealer and ask for a fuel injection service, or you can remove the injectors and send them out to a place such as cruzinperformance, www.cruzinperformance.com ....
Either way, expect to pay around $100 for this. Or, you can trade in your fuel injectors for a new set at $250 or thereabouts.
