turbo questions

ok, so ive been going back and forth on which engine im building for my project. its between a hybrid 3.4, or a boosted 2.8.

so, heres the questions. im just doing research at this point, and will buy parts after i make up my mmind.

goal: 200+ RWHP, pump gas. in a 2800 lb, 5 speed, 3.42 geard vehicle. used for DD and autocross.

here goes:
after readig through things, it looks like a MAF and FMU is the way to go for budget reasons. lot easier than megaquirt, chips, etc. and cheaper. is this correct?

can i adapt the 3.1 or 3.4 intake and throttle body to the 2.8 and MAF setup? ive seen where they have bigger ports and flow better. im converting from TBI anyway, so maniolds ae open to me.

what PCM will i be looking for? what years?

in my area i can get volvo turbo's for stupid cheap. also mitsubishi turbo's and chrysler 2.2 turbos. i know none of these will be optimal for max power, but i dont need max power. throttle response, modest power, etc are the goals. down low torque is not as much of a concern, as i already have traction issues during real tight sections of the sutocross course.

any other hangups i need to know about? ill be following the how to sticky at the top of the page, only doing a rear mount turbo with an external fluid pump for oil return due to space constraints.

Re: turbo questions

look for a chrysler turbo those are t3 60 trims will spoll up lightning fast and have great throttle responce.

ideally go with the megasquirt since u have to change the ecm and harness anyway.
megasquirt will run u 311 bucks shiped u just have to solder the right connectors onto the harness

well worth it by the time u add up the cost of a stock ecm the time it takes to swap harness and the cost of an fmu.

i would not do a rear mount for autox front mount even if an under k setup will be much better for ur aplication

2.8/3.1 intakes are the same, the 3.4 upper will bolt on but noone knows if it will clear the distributor

Re: turbo questions

reason i was looking at the stock PCM was that i can get it and the wiring for 40 bucks from my favorite junkyard. this will be a true budget build either way, due to the nature of the GRM challenge.

ill look into the chrysler turbos.

and why not a rearmount? figured i could still use my longtubes, etc, and theres a lot of real estate under the vehicle that im not currently using.

also, the ebay FMU's are pretty cheap. like 80 bucks. so i can still get out cheaper that way if it'll run and live happily.

any ignition mods need to be done?
and is MAF the way to go or MAP?

lastly, if i need to go underhood, any reason i cant use a set of FWD manifolds so i already have a crossover tube and everything i need?

thanks for the help so far.

Michael

Re: turbo questions

well maf is the way to go for easy, the map computer will not read boost stock.

the proplem with a rear mount and the maf computer is that the maf sensor must be on the turbo inlet i.e draw threw.

ignition will work fine stock at low boost just close the spark plug gap uo to .028

i dont think the fwd manifolds will clear the altanator

Re: turbo questions

You can make a low mount alt bracket out of a smog pump bracket & some shims. I'm going to use one on my 3400 hybrid. MAP is generally considered the better choice for forced induction, but maf also works well. The '302 ecm (stock for 86'-90' v6's) is actually a good choice for turbo'ing because of the timing retard vs mat table. Although otherwise you're pretty limited with that ecm because of the lack of interest. '730 and '165 ecm's are thoroughly hacked and always a good choice. You have plenty of room infront of the motor to plop a turbo, I'd just switch the stock manifolds and weld up some pipe to make routing simpler.
