Crazy timing!!!!..distributor help!!!

Ok,,so i got this "mechanic" to put in a new cam and lifter set with new timing chain,if i can ever find my timing mark on the pulley i will set the timing.Problem, the distributor is set all the way to advance(full clockwise) with no movement other than retard, isn't the distributor supposed to have play in it for both ways for adjustment?..oh..the car is a 1992 rs with a 3.1 v6 auto.

Re: Crazy timing!!!!..distributor help!!!

Well it wasn't even bolted down when i got the car but i got TDC back then and actually had to pull the dist. out and reset it(timing). Now it is still bolted back down after the cam was put in it but I think he didn't mark anything before he pulled it out(dist.)..The car will run but I never saw a dist. fully advanced in order for it to run at all..one of the dist. cap screws used to be right at the firewall but now i can see it plain as day.Would pulling it out after i find TDC,turn it to where the dist. cap screw was before and turning the rotor button to #1 plug help in getting me in the ballpark to correct timing?

With the cap off,put in the dist-watch how far the roter moves-pull dist-rotate roter in opposite direction as when installed to see how far it moved-keep in mind where #1 is on the roter/cap.Put in the dist. Basicaly this should be close enough to fire up and idle with no backfire/stumble.Good luck.

Re: Crazy timing!!!!..distributor help!!!

Thanx guys,me and my brother who has a '91 with a 3.6 pulled my dizzy out(which was 180 degrees wrong),and set the timing, check this out. When i moved it into the shade for the timing gun there was this huge amount of oil on the ground(like half the crankcase),it wasnt there when i went under it to get a fallen piece 30 minutes before(plus when we got it cranked it,it only ran about 5 minutes),but when i went up under to see the leak(in a new area) i saw nothing!!.I shut it off and checked my oil after it sat a few minutes(to let it drain back),after 3 checks it said almost full, and it wasnt tranny fluid,so WTF!!!
