My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

.... recently picked up an '86 that needed LOADS of TLC, which just missed being headed to the crusher. Just didn't have the heart to let that happen lol. This car though is honestly the perfect platform to go out and have some fun with, and with my Grand National buddies daring me to boost it, I figured why the hell not. The first picture was when I first brought it home, had to borrow Dave's Iroc Rims in the rear cuz the stockers just wouldn't get it here. The body needed some attention, so I started to install some parts that I had from an '86 Z28 that I had lying around. I then pulled the A/C out in favor for a delete box that I got from a G20 van (which works flawlessly, and for only ten bucks), and then I temporarily rerouted the coolant lines up and over the EGR, just until I disable it from the ECM, and block it off. Engine runs very strong for what it is, just needs to be cleaned up though, and gone through. Gonna try and get this done as fast as I can, as so far its only been a week. I just got done installing a set of new brakes and rotors, as well as some Black GTA crosslace rims all around, and tan leather 4th gen seats. A 145-mph speedo is going in tomorrow. Stay tuned....

nice be sure to stick with a t3/t4 with the 2.8 i wouldnt go much larger then that until u get cam/ported heads on it.

t3 .63 with the t4 coldside

i still have a few tunes for the 2.8/turbo laying around for that motor so if u keep the setup close to the specs i ran i can send u the tune files

I'm cringing about the idea of removing the exhaust manifold bolts, as I'm waiting for them to go SNAP lmao. Been soaking them in WD-40 every single day, so hopefully they won't give me any trouble. If they do, I guess I'll have a prted set of heads sooner than I realized. BTW, you gotta give me those Delta cam specs of yours lol. Gonna see if Eric can burn me a chip using the GN MAF sensor which I nabbed at the swap meet, but rescale it down for the 2.8, just for now. Megasquirt is still here, so I'll definitely need those tune files....

Thanks. I have so much Blue Metallic paint just sitting here, and I wanted to keep it the same color, but the Black is really growing on me. Gotta finish the ground effects, but the rockers are a pita, cuz I have to spot weld the bracket on the bottom....

2 tips

#1 forget the wd-40 use pb blaster instead
#2 get the motor slightly warmed up before u remove the bolts will make it lil easier

dont use maf

do megasquirt controlling ignition and fuel stright up sd system, of u can do maf with a ford maf sensor and the ms ecu

edit

runa delta 260-2 cam with the 2.8 can i run is to top end oriented for what u got i.e stock gearing/converter etc

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

Speaking of which, do you have that part number to the TCI stall speed converter your running? Cannot find it for ***** on SummitRacing.com. The gears are 3.42, and I'm getting Paul to swap in a posi from a '92 Formula that I picked up, but he will toss the 2.77's that it came with, and swap in the stock 3.42's. Also buying those Edelbrock lower control arms that he has lying around, collecting dust....

Nah, not gunning for any record.... or am I.

I'm actually planning on racing Gary Donavan's Reliant next Spring, as, from what he recently told me, has a few new surprises in the works with his K car. Got my work cut out for me with this car, as I'm already looking for a cage....

Dude, you ever coming back here or what....?

I might be able to, where is it @ the shop still? E-town has gotten pretty intense man, especially the street wars. That's how I started talking to Gary, as he's coming down to spank some Imports next spring. Gotta get him to race Paul though, although Paul has gotten much faster now that he has that FAST setup dialed in....

.... well, the speedometer is in, didn't want to wait til tomorrow. Never try to connect the speedometer cable in the dark, as my hands are cut up beyond belief lol. Just took the car for a spin, and after three passes, it is spot on (thanks to the electronic police mph monitor setup down the block). Forgive the dust on the dash, as I've yet to wipe it down and hit it with armor all. BTW, dashboard pad is freaking mint, which shocked the hell out of me when I bought it, as I was expecting crack after crack lol.

What's wrong with maf? '165 with a t-bird maf is just as capable as a megasquirt- with more features. Or better yet a '730 with code 59. Amazing what a change getting rid of that '86 nose makes for that car.

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

Actually, MAF will work rather well in the beginning. I already have a '7148, along with a turbo buick MAF sensor, so now it's just the matter of recalibrating for less cubic inches, and adding a few sensors to the engine. Should be fine up to 15-psi, but once boost see's close to 30-psi, I'll need to take advantage of Megasquirt's 16-bit processor. The '165 8-bit is fine, but only up to a certian RPM point, and this engine will see way beyond that limit. Could always have Bailey modify the ECM's driver to run peak and hold injectors, and I wouldn't even need the Megasquirt, but I already have MS-II though....

megasquirt has way more features that are usefull for racing then the stock ecm does, theres nothing wrong with maf setups, infact the stock maf system on the v6 camaro is better then the sd systems for boosting upto a point on a stock ecm

the gn maf he has wont work with either the stock ecm or the megasquirt though,u have to use a ford maf with the ms ecu or any other maf with a 0-5 volt output,

stock v6 maf is a frequency maf

keep the stock maf with the stock ecm till ur ready to run past the 12 psi range,

stock fuel pump will also get u to the low 13's but i wouldnt push it past 13.2-13.3 though

first thing u should do is go with paul over to the junkyard and grab a fwd buick fuel rail and regulator like we did with my car cut up the fuel rail and fittings and make it bolt into the stock return line.

i belive u still have pics of the one i did for my car if not ill get u some

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

Not much to report today, other than the fact that the stock rear bearings are shot beyond belief, and I need to get that other rear in asap. The panhard bar is also off by an inch and a half, but luckily I have an adjustable one from another build. Pulled the EGR out, and will have block off plates on the exhaust manifold and intake plenum by tomorrow. I also pulled the stock ignition coil off, and am installing an aftermarket one on the firewall next to the dizzy....

Yeah, Dave, lemme see some pics of that fuel setup. Did you pull the stock regulator off, or did you just leave it disconnected....?

Thanks.

.... am so tempted to throw in a tuned port 355 that I have lying around, but the V6 will be so much more challenging though. So far so good, all the bolts are coming out, but I'm still cringing looking at those heads. I tell you though, if more than one bolt snaps on the 2.8 exhaust manifolds, the V8 is going in lmao!

How high do you plan on turning this thing? All my turbo plans are right around 6500rpm, but I plan on twin turbos to keep rpm modest.

You might be challenged either way. Tpi will give you the torque you want but it's still hard to make it breathe above 5k. Displacement is the v6's challenge with better heads.

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

The engine will be spinning up to 7500-RPM, but this is heavily depending on the grind that I go with from Delta Cams, as well as what I do to the heads to eliminate any possible valve float. I still have a T-76 turbo just sitting next to the Megasquirt II that I planned on throwing onto another project, but if I can get my hands on that 4000-RPM stall from TCI. I just might throw it on the little V6 to see what she can do....

The stock plug wires were arcing terribly, and the plugs were absolute garbage. I buttoned up the vacuum lines from the now removed EGR setup, but I haven't relocated the coil yet. Going to run a quick inspection underneath the distributor cap, throw on some new plugs, wires and coil, then check the BLMS's. I threw on some temporary block off plates for the time being, and while I was down there, I noticed that one of the exhaust manifold bolts were already broken (stud is still there, which I'll grab with a vice later on)....

.... Dave, didn't you trade that blue intake manifold already?

Ya, just makes it easier to keep rpm down. 2 smallish turbos coming up to pressure sooner than 1 huge one.

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

Not much to report in terms of the turbo setup, as right now I'm just finishing up the body. Installed the rest of the ground effects, rear bumper and gridded taillights. Once I'm happy with the fitment of everything, everything is coming back off, car is getting sanded down, and will be re-painted. The black has really grown on me, but I'm leaning more towards Blue Metallic now though. The turbo w/exhaust will be installed before painting though....

This is my second G20 box, the first one was out of a GMC 2500, but they're relatively the same box. A strip of metal was added to the first one, but after repositioning the second one, you don't need to add additional metal. The stock hamster wheel (blower cage) must be used from the G20 delete box, as it's shorter than the 1LE box wheels, so be sure to take the blower motor and cage with the box. You also need to drill a relieve hole into the box for the blower head unit, so the rubber hose has something to hook up to, but that can easily be tapped in with a threaded fitting from Home Depot. I've still yet to modify the wiring on this one, as I can't stand seeing clutter, but thanks for reminding me lol....

Here was the process for the first one....;

Cool thread! I'm subscribing... I'm interested to see how this works out for ya. And here's a youtube video I found, I thought you might be interested in it. It's kinda mickey moused but the guy seems to have an interesting system going. Although his car sounds like it has an ugly knock at times... or is it just me.

Yeah, I seen that video already lol, it was posted on this board awhile back. That car must be running so very lean, as I believe the stock '302 ECM's can only see up to 155 g/sec, and then after that, the stock injectors are more than likely static. It's just a matter of time before that engine goes kaboom....

That's what bigger injectors are for, right? lol
I just wonder if that guy's done any work to that car since his last video... he hasn't been posting updates. Does he have a TGO account?

Depending on boost levels, he could honestly get away with just upping the fuel pressure, but from what I am seeing, he is running a bone stock 2.8, and the MAF could only compensate for so much. Don't forget that in WOT, the O2 readings become irrelevant, and you need to adjust the pulse width for the larger injectors, otherwise the ECM just assumes they're stock, and you'll still be lean, because your shooting for an 11.0 AFR in PE....

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

He's running that small of a turbo lol? Where did he get it from? Doesn't matter though, as long as he's having some fun with the car, as thats what its all about. Nothing new to report with the engine, as the stock rearend was making some WWII noises awhile back, so I had to pull the rear axles out to change the bearings. The stock exhaust was also rubbing on, well, it was rubbing on practically everything lol, so I pulled it off. Gonna throw on that Grand National setup that Paulie hooked me up with (remember?), just for now....

Edit: Something hilarious though I'll share with ya, last Wednesday night we go to Englishtown, me, Paulie, Shawn, and the guy that just bought Shawn's Buick GNX, it was mobbed. There were a total of 3 clean ups that took place since opened, all of them the entire length of the track. It took at least a half hour to forty five minutes each to clean. Sooo, after the announcer keeps apologizing to the spectators for all of the delays, it's now after 9:00 at night, and its freezing out. Races start back up, and the announcer urges everyone again; "please, please, please, if you hear something wrong in the engine, PULL OVER to the side of the track, and we'll come and get you" (rather than oiling the entire length of the track all over again). First race at that time, goes good. Second race, goes good. Third race (Paulie), and he SMOKES the whole damn track up rotfflmmfao (his '86 w/the rollbar)! His rearview was facing down, and he couldn't see the smoke. The car actually QUIT after the 1/8th mile on it;s own, and he STILL ran a 10.5 @ 125-mph. It was his birthday too that night....

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

How much you want for it Dave, as the T-76 might be a little too much for the motor right now, and I wanted to save that for my GTA. Just doing a little more cleaning up with the car, especially now that the good weather is making a slight comeback for the next few days. I picked up a practically brand new 3.1 Radiator w/hoses yesterday at the junkyard, and although everything hooks up nice, I need to go back to the junkyard and get the upper and lower fan brackets, as the stockers are way too short. The stock 2.8 radiator is tiny in comparison. Pulled, and shortened some more vacuum wire from the engine bay, and am resetting the valve lash today. Wanna try to get a Z28 steering rack, and sway bars in today as well, so hopefully the weather reaches it's projected 68 degrees today....

Re: My '86 2.8 Turbo Camaro Build, This Is Going To Be Fun....

if u can keep ur eyes out for a manual s10 box,why do u want the z28 box anyway?? only diff i know of is its slightly higher ratio and it has the correct stops for 16 inch rims

biggest i would go with the 2.8 would be a 66mm

this is the t76 on my motor

Name: t76.jpg
Views: 538
Size: 43.8 KB
so it would deff be surging on the 2.8, i did those plots figuring spool with the .8x housing
and with the larger ex housing
Name: t76-1.jpg
Views: 402
Size: 41.2 KB

the t76 i ended up getting has a .96 housing on it so it should get me away from the surge line

im not 100% sure on getting rid of the 60mm just yet but if i do hows about 275 sound

Price is good Dave, so if you part with it, I'll buy it. Just wanted to go on record and say that these engines are the worst engines that GM ever came up with. Took me a awhile just to get the damn valve covers off, thanks to the mile long studs lol. Had to move everything out of the way just to get them up and out, and it took almost an hour, but the valves took five minutes...
