Jumped time or froze to death
Jumped time or froze to death
Once again my ignorance on fuel injection cars shines thru!
3.1- '90 model bird. Was running fine. Cold weather hit overnight..around 18 degrees, and I started the car to let it warm up a few minutes. It fired up immediately, then the smog pump locked up and stalled the engine before I could get back to shut it off.
Took the belt off and tried to start the engine. Absolutely no go.
Late that evening, I tried it again, it fired right up, ran ragged for a few seconds, then died. Did that same thing 3 days in a row, and hasn't started since.
Fuel pump had been acting weird so I decided it might have died. New pump...still no start.
Checked spark...good healthy spark. Gave it a shot of starting fluid...won't even sputter.
The engine spins over like a top...no mechanical noises.
It seems like it does make a feeble attempt to try and fire, but then just spins over.
Weather has been crappy, and haven't had a chance to get very far into this.
Could the smog pump locking up and stalling the engine possibly cause this thing to be out of time now? Seems it would at least try to burn the starting fluid, even if it wasn't getting a drop of gas.
I've read threads till I have a headache, and weather permitting tomorrow, I'm going to do a few checks on things.
Yeah, I'm a dinosaur from carb and points days, and my ignorance on electronic cars does shine thru, but I guess it's time to learn a few things. Suggestions or criticisms...I'd just like to get this sucker running again.

The pump locking up wont do anything more than make your belt squeal like a hamster was stuck in there. The pump and belt dont have enough torque to mess up anything in your engine. Not sure what your auto knowledge is so sorry if i step on your toes.....
A few questions to get some more details....
1. you checked spark at the plugs, right?
2. does your key have the lil chip in it?
3. keep in mind, you need 3 things to run; air/fuel, spark, compression. have you checked compression? (though not a likely culprit from what you described.)
4. what kind of maintenance history does the car have?
5. any codes set? use the paper clip trick if needed to check for codes
My initial thought, is that yes, your timing is off.
