Sup guys, I did a search and couldn't find a thread for this, so..
just wondering how loud your v6 is.
Does you neighbourhood hear you when you start your car in the morning?
Does anyone ever mistake you for a v8?
My car is loud, but I'm wondering if it always sounded like that, or if I have a hole in the muffler or something (not fart cannon loud, but a nice sounding loud)...
Anyways,
Stay Black.

Back when I was going to college, I set off a few car alarms in the parking garage with my Flowmaster (and with my engine running a bit on the bad side). Now, I probably could do the same, but I don't usually use parking garages. Nor do I have my Flowmaster anymore.

All the time, people tell me I wake them up in the morning when I leave early starting my car and they always know that when I'm driving by because they know my exhaust note, and people think that I have a 305 all the time, I turn it on and they're like "What for a V8 you got in that?" and I'm like the one with 3 cylinders on each side....gets 'em everytime! lol

I have a Cherrybomb glass pack on my header'd 3.4, It would set off car alarms every once in a while. It sounded r i c e at high rpms though. I just put a stock Walker brand cat back on it with a cam and alot of people think it sounds like a V8, has a deep throaty sound when you step in it.

Yep. People did the same to me, even when I had my "3.1 (and 2.8, which is what I first had) Multi-Port FI" emblems on each side... Not too many pay attention to that sort of thing.Originally Posted by FireInMe17

Yeah, when I got the car all my friends thought it was awesome sounding for a V6 and most of them couldn't believe it when i told them it didn't have a V8 in itOriginally Posted by Maverick H1L

, well for the ones that couldn't believe it all I had to do was race them and they found out just how slow the car is lolI raced a friends 2003 Mustang V6 and it blew me away, we were going up a hill so you guys know how that works out in our cars, but he said it sounded good as he was passing me, and most of my friends think my V6 sounds better than that Mustangs V6

I have flowmasters on my RS and it has a deep loud sound. Ppl never believe its a 2.8 and even when i race them they don't believe me (0to60 in 7.5sec). I have to show them my engine.

My old Camaro was pretty damn loud, theres a video of it on this forum somewhere, if not its on streetfire.net

My v6 has a nice "throaty" sound, but it's a little quieter since I put the hood pad on

Me too. Headers into glasspacks.
Too loud back when it ran.
2.5 dynomax sounded nice, then I added headers, now it's too loud for me.

Right now mine's dead silent...but I imagine its going to be pretty loud when I finish it, I have 0 hood insulation, it will have headers and a full new stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust with a cherry bomb vortex muffler, and I'm going to put a decent sized cam in, its also going to have 12.89:1 compression, and large heads and plenum :P
My lumina was pretty loud with a gen II 3.1 when the exhaust snapped right behind the cat...drove like that for a while...then got my buick I couldn't even tell when it was running...Also air intakes make a surprisingly large impact on sound....my buick got a lot louder with a cone filter on it's 3100.

Manifolds, stainless pipe, flowmaster highflow cat, and a flowmaster 80 series and its the loudest car in my driveway. Outbeating the 2002 Ram 4.7 with a glass pack and the 1994 pontiac transam. Sounds great at low RPM's but the higher you get the worse it gets. Still love it though. I always get the nice car is it a V8?

I can only imagine what mine's going to sound like with almost the same CR and all... Except I'll probably go for a Magnaflow (anything but another Blowmaster). Makes me wonder what she's going to sound like when I get the money and ambition to go true duals Originally Posted by 3rd gen RS

.That Buick you described sounds kind of like the Grand Prix I used to have... Couldn't even tell the thing was running if you didn't either look under the hood or at the tach, and when I put the factory muffler back on it, I didn't even have it sealed up right at the inlet. That Thrush mufller made it sound like crap, though...

:edit: There's also a thread with exhaust clips around here somewhere...
Mine was pretty loud. On many occassions, I had people come up to me at the drag strip thinking I had a V8 in it. I couldn't believe that they couldn't tell from the high rpm scream that it was a v6. But, several times, peoples' mouth dropped when I told them it was a built 3.1.

??? My car has a 6.5 sec 0-60 and it's hardly touched other than tuning, gears & headers. 7.5 sounds pretty reasonable to me.Originally Posted by FireInMe17

One thing to remember: loud does not always equal good. lol
I'm pretty happy with the sound of mine, stock exhaust minus the cat and plus a cherrybomb. Not loud but, nice low sound at idle and normal v6 sound when it gets goin.

Mine can hit like 8 or 9 but getting down to 7 is pushing it, I need to tune and knock out my cat and get some better gears in her, I love my V6 Originally Posted by bl85c

damn.. mine was 5.7 sec 0-60
would have been closer to 5 sec if i hadn't killed the 2nd gear synchro.

I dont have a muffler or cat on mine, so its loud enough, set off a few car alarms.

I think the V6's sound decent even stock, they burble nicely on idle but they can sound a bit, dare I say it, r.i.c.e, under throttle :P
I wouldn't mind something a bit more interesting than my stock exhaust system

I agree, the V6 exhaust doesn't sound bad stock. Not to quietor high pitched like some other v6's.
What I really want to do is get a set of 1.6 rocker arms, I hear those improve the exhaust note throuought the rpm band.

They would, it does the same thing as dropping in a bigger cam, they give you more lift.
Supreme Member
headers make a big difference in the sound, the 1.6 rockers not so much.
the 60v6 really likes an X pipe as well

Wouldn't that be overkill on a non extremely built one?

my camaro v6 is stock, doesn't sound too bad, but it can hear the intake over the exhaust. my bronco ii on the other hand will wake up the entire county when it's over 2000 rpm
Supreme Member
Too loud at idle. Only because sometimes when its cold, it likes to idle at 3000 rpm.

If its doing that you need to adjust your TPS, mine got messed up and made it do that as well for a while and it completely had me dumb founded, haha!Originally Posted by Firebat

Yeah, even with an extremely built one I think it would be overkill to be honest. If flow was really an issue I'd just go with a bigger diameter and keep weight to a minimum.

maybe, but with a built engine it helps.Originally Posted by K-slice

I could spin my slicks for the first 1/8 mile of the track if i wanted to.. which is exactly why i'm putting the engine in a Fbody.. so that doesn't happen.
i get the V8 comment at the track when i'm idling in the staging lanes, most of the time it's "wtf is under that hood??"

3500, right?
My Camaro has holes in the I-pipe near the muffler, louder than my dad's 99 Grand Prix (has headers and 3" down pipe w/ stock mufflers).
I'll be building a 3.4 with headers and full exhaust...i'll make a comparison clip in the future for everyone.

Should put a 3500 top end on it :P Those 3.4 RWD intake manifolds can't breathe for crap.
Supreme Member
yes, full 3500.

Oh, that head swap isn't out of the question yet, having a 3.4 with the crank trigger and the whole DIS setup still installed will help for that kind of swap. Will be a nice powerful feeling/sounding V6 to match my dad's n/a 3800 II. Originally Posted by 3rd gen RS

Time and money, though...sigh
