i don't think i'd get you out of the car..
It really is a blast to drive, I've driven/owned lots of 3rd gens with different engine combinations. While not the fastest, it's pretty nice to be able to light the tires up from a roll with a little V6.
Way more fun than my Cavalier was too..

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
I got 16 runs in today at the MFBA track rental, DA was pretty high but i managed a best of 13.94 @ 99.4 MPH.
I figured out the trans issue, the shift cable is a little out of adjustment. I was finally able to shift close to 7K. I don't think the 700R4 was happy about that but it held.
At the top of 2nd and through 3rd under load there is a very noticeable vibration. Once i let off it smooths out but it's something that i'm going to have to keep an eye on.
Got a few other things to work on, maybe a bit more weight reduction and i need to finally get my slicks mounted so i can push the 60' times down..2.15 is just pathetic. haha
Tune wise, my 33# injectors are going above 80% duty cycle.. it's time for an upgrade there too.

i know ur motor prolly wants to sping that high but if the 700 is pretty stock try to shift a lil lower say 6,800
right around 7k rpms the centrifical forces try to apply the 3-4 clutchpack burning up the transmission. it will run like that for some time but eventually it causes alot of extra heat and will start to warp the steels inside the transimission
there are a few various fixes for that issue though, id talk to dana at probuilt and he will get u setup with the right stuff to spin that thing that high and make it live
nice times too that should put u right around 300 crank

You definitely need a higher than stock capacity rotor pump for your transmission, they make ones that have more vanes for higher rpm applications.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
trans internals are stock aside from Dana's "modified street/strip" shift kit and the 'vette servo.
I talked to him last season about it, he agreed that it's going to need some better internals. I have a local shop that's got a good reputation, if i go that route i'll probably just drop it off there. I've done my time inside an auto tranny, not again.. lol
assuming my tach is right, i was 1-2 shifting at about 6800 and 2-3 shifting about 6700. My rev limiter is at 7100 so i try to push it as close to that as possible. Engine makes peak power between 6500 and 7K, peak torque at 4500 so the 700R4's shift points are almost ideal. 1-2 drops from 6800 to 4500, 2-3 drops from 6700 to 4700 and i'm finishing off the track at about 5500.
The vibration comes on at about 5K in 2nd under heavy load and continues through 3rd. It's fine under normal driving, car is as smooth as can be expected with solid mounts.
It could be the flex plate, it's just a stock 2.2 S10 unit..

Forget it, too much hassle. Not just a re-geared continuation of the pre-'93 T5. More in common with the Mustang version. Best solution is an '88-'92 V8 version of the T5, especially at 263 RWTQ w/ 700R-4, just use a 660 bellhousing on it, direct bolt-in.

I found a 4th gen T5 at the yard, while that is an option i'm still not convinced that it'll hold up.

I'm looking at using a Nissan trans behind my 660 that if the reported power handling is correct, would have no issues standing up behind your engine.

Time to have some fun...

15x3.5 Pro Stars with M/T Frontrunners (20 lbs each), 26x11.5x16 ET-Streets on 16x8 Steel rims. Got a great deal on the setup, only had to drive a little under 2 hours to pick them up.
I also removed the front sway bar per everyone's recommendations and removed the helper bags that were in the rear coils. Adjusted the shifter cable so it should hold 2nd gear like normal now. Also added a pin to the '7730 for fan 2, then wired that into the cluster's un-used "temp" light. light comes on at 200F now and off at 180F. Works good.
Sanded/cleaned all the cluster contacts so i don't have to beat on the dash to see my oil pressure, voltage and fuel level. Also moved the tach to a better spot.
Pretty much ready to go back out on 6/10 for another track rental, just need to address a small clearance problem with my left tailpipe.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
no luck today, 2800' DA and a bog off the line kept me in the same range as last time. My best 60' was still a 2.1 on 11" wide ET streets.
I think AE and PE are overlapping, AFR drops to the 9's/10's for a split second and it's taking about 30' to recover. Tried all kinds of stuff but I need to dig deeper into the code to see what's going on.
Using the P/N rev limiter for launching worked out well but i had to drop it to 2500 RPM or else i'd burn the tires.
Nothing broke, didn't overheat, 60 mile round trip + 13 passes.. just a little over 1/2 tank used.
I have some in-car videos that i'll post up soon, there may be some on Youtube as well, not sure yet.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
It does for sure, i just don't want to take it too high. It's $175 to have them redo it and about a week turnaround.
4500 would be ideal, that's pretty much where max torque is.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
no need for a momentary as long as code 59 is set up like $A1, it's only active if the car isn't moving. Once you let off the brake and roll > 1 MPH the limiter is disabled.
I was making full passes with the switch on shifting at 6700 ish. It worked good at the line, should work much better now with the bigger stall.
My fastest run so far was a 13.94 @ 99.4 with a 2.15 60' on street tires, All my runs with slicks were pretty similar. I'm pretty confident that it'll run quite a bit better now. The air should be nice and cool that morning which will also help.

Im not sure if I can set up a Park/N on Code59 or not. I need to look into it as that would help my launches I know that.

Didn't end up running it this weekend, it was just too hot to even try. 104F and a 3600' DA. I might just have to suck it up and go over on a Friday night.

its been so dam hot everywere, im on the edge of the desert so u can imagine how hot it is here, the only good thing is its like 105* with 0% humidity, u can take a short jog and not get all sweaty.
+ side is it drops into the low 50's or better at night
with 99mph trap speeds u shoudl be able to go mid to low 13's with it
i still think u shoudl build a common plenum upto the stacks and go turbocharged
btw do u have any vids from inside the car that show just how loud those itbs are at high rpms, id imagine u can hear them over the ex system pretty well

I grew up in New Mexico, i miss the low humidity.. haha
I've got several in-car videos on the camera, I'll work on getting them uploaded. The stacks are louder than the exhaust for sure.

99* with a heat index of 115+ here...I HATE humidity...it was 112* in the shade last weekend before the humidity, and I was at the track, lol. My track is 200' above sea level. The DA was over 4000' at one point...was aweful. The car was two tenths off to the 1/8!

Just kidding man. Its been 100* here with high humiity but finally the heat has subsided and is back to the upper 80's. Thankfully. Id like to see you make the times I currently am and faster, mid 13's. That is so impressive out of a all motor engine. Nice!

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
Seeing this swap makes me want one in my Firebird, only with a turbo. I swapped a 3500 into my Fiero a few months ago and love it.
I'm wondering though, do you think I could get an LT1 T56 clutch fork to clear the starter with an adapter plate and possibly some clearancing? I've seen an SBC trans - 60*V6 adapter plate for about $65 and I'd obviously need a flywheel spacer but other than the starter location I don't see it being too costly to adapt. I'm mostly wondering because I already have a T56 and don't want to swap in an auto.

Thanks,
Same engine in a similar weight car has already ran a 13.07, once this is dialed in better 12's will be easy.
Not sure on the LT1 T56, that's going to need a real mockup to see.
You could put the starter on the other side, it wouldn't take much to drill/tap the inboard hole but your issue will be the other hole. I bet you could make some sort of bracket to correct that though.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
Stopped by the track tonight to try and get some runs in, ended up with 1 good run (2 total). The new 4K stall is a huge improvement for sure.
New best of 13.67 @ 99 with a 1.9 60' on my 26x11 slicks @ 15 PSI
I didn't use the 2 step this time, i will next time for sure when i can get a bunch more runs in. No videos or datalogs, just a quick and dirty T&T.
No other updates, been driving the car as much as possible. Trans still has a weird leak after sitting for a few days. I bought a new pan from Summit, hoping that fixes it.

Nice, I was at the track as well, and got only 2 runs in, sucks.
I'm envious of your short times.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
Spent the day replacing the trans pan to try to stop the annoying trans leak, and since the whole exhaust had to be removed I went ahead and installed a pair of cutouts that i had laying around.. lol
I should probably get some kind of award for the most complicated 60v6 exhaust... Longtubes feeding TD's with 2 o2 sensors, X pipe, 45 degree crank case evac setup, manual cutouts and Hooker mufflers.

Back info on the trans leak, It's happened since i put the 700R4 in, after troubleshooting and replacing/redoing the cooler lines, re-sealing the dip stick tube and TV cable seal and replacing the pan gasket twice (rubber then cork) it would be fine for weeks... then once the humidity would go up (rain) i'd have a huge puddle under the car.
I'll be dammed, the strangest trans leak i've ever seen.
new TCI Chrome trans pan with a rubber gasket, everything coated in gear oil rated RTV, all new bolts.. we'll see if it happens again. UV reactive dye in the fluid didn't help much, stock pan was pretty beat up so i hope that was the cause.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
I think the rubber gaskets don't like the RTV? I've had past experiences where the one pushes the other out. Its my understanding that you just oil the rubber gasket like you do the oil filter gasket, then install it.
I might be thinking of something else, but it keeps sending an alarm bell.
Nice exhaust!

Re: My 3.5 swap project...
Perfect weather, perfect track and the tune is dialed in really well. Ran consistent 13.5x all day with 1.8 60's. I've got lots of video to go through, will post some when i get them uploaded.
I let the wife drive it as well, first time behind the wheel and first 1/4 mile pass.. 14.1@95 with a 1.9 60'. Not bad at all
as for the hunt for 12's, I'm going to pull off the ITB's and go back to my 3500 UIM/75mm TB to do some testing. The shorter runner length may help or hurt the power band. Got another track rental in 2 weeks, plenty of time to play...
and still no trans leaks

Awww, but those ITB's look sooo nice on top of that engine.
Otherwise, great results. When does the turbo go on?

Hmmm...I think I have the same thing stuck in my throat, too.
