Broken Timing Gear
In May 2007, a bolt backed out of my timing chain damper and shattered my timing gear. October 2009, while I was driving, the same thing happened. I ran some simple diagnostics and determined that it wasn't a simple fix, so I had to devote all my time to getting my winter truck on the road. I just recently started tearing it apart, and saw this:

Now I'm unsure on why this one broke, I'm going to see the distance between the crank and the timing cover to make sure the crank isn't walking. I've also heard that the harmonics from pinging can cause damage like this (or worse). Either way I needed to replace my timing set, so I found this:

Cloyes Double Roller Timing Set
So this weekend I'm going to install this as well as replace the oil pan and both front and rear suspension.
If anyone has any ideas why this happened, that would be great.
Thanks

Re: Broken Timing Gear
I installed the double roller today, and before I button it up I have a question. The timing chain damper does not fit with this style chain, the bottom gear's teeth are too big. The chain itself is pretty tight, especially compared to a stock chain. Do I need the damper? I talked to my dad who has built countless engines (pre FI) and he says the V8's don't use them. Here are some pictures:

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
