88 2.8 problems

I finally got the motor back in my car and at first it would idle but when i would attempt to rev it up it would die, mt grandpa adjusted some stuff, (not timing) now it won't idle but will run with throttle, as it backfires like none other on all 6 cylinders. And i need the sensor on the back of the passenger side head, but i have no clue what it is or anything like that but it has an oval plug with a round connector in the center anyone know what this is because the local parts houses have no clue as to what it is and its not in the Chilton repair manual, thanks in advance

That would be the temp sensor

Two things I would recommend would be check your MAF sensor, and IAC. Given your timing is set right.

That would actually be the backup switch for the coolant fan, not any temp sensor, which is either in the intake manifold next to the thermostat housing or in the same position on the driver's side head. Don't kno if it can be gotten at a parts house or if you have to go to GM to get it. When mine broke, there was one from another car we used to have that never got installed, so I put that one in.

Check your timing.

You can get that switch at AutoZone. I got one for about $6.00. Just tell them you need the fan switch thats located on the passenger side head. As for your idle problem, i would really check your timing. If it is set properly, then check/clean your IAC and throttle body. Heres the link for what you need. It should be the first pic you see there.
