no start / wiring issue

well after having this strange problem for a while i guess it finally time too fix it !
the car is a 92 camaro rs 3.1 bw t5
i did a search and read a few post but to no dice.
so the problem is sometimes i mean very rarely id turn my key over to start my car and i get no crank no start.
so id wait a second or two and she'll fire right up after that !
so i changed out my ign switch and i hi/low dimmer my starter and my + battery cable now my problem is i have power to everything
radio
dash
engine bay
taillight
interior
my car ran great for 2 weeks and now it wont start .
all the normal lights come on and go off on start up.
but the dash e brake stays on and the car dosnt turn over !
engine turns over freely, fuel pump primes,

so my question is how do i adjust the ign switch?
i was told to put the tumbler it the run position and install the rod the bolt the rack to the steering colum?

i also checked the vats wire and tumbler everything checked out ok
plus my key is new !

also iam looking for this starter enable relay location
i pulled the kick panel and nothing but i did have few wires
that have nothing too them
here are some pics

Re: no start / wiring issue

Sounds like you have a vats problem.

Re: no start / wiring issue

you said "the car dosnt turn over !
engine turns over freely"
if you're meaning that it cranks but doesn't start, its gotta be a fueling problem or ignition.
if you mean you can spin the motor with a wrench or something, but the starter won't engage... one thing I'd look at (mainly if the car has an alarm with a starter cutout) is the alarm itself and the heavy black wires under the dash that are part of the starter circuit and wire in with the cutout. I had a starter problem with my car ever since I had it...finally found that connections for the starter cutout circuit for a previously installed alarm were the culprit. The amperage wasn't getting through them and to the starter. I gotta go do some stuff right now but since I recently went through this, I got pretty familiar with the whole starter circuit (and thanks to another person or two on here)...I'll offer some more help, later. If you would, let me know which of the scenarios above is what you meant.

Re: no start / wiring issue

I think he meant to say that the engine isn't locked but isn't turning over with the starter, either.

That pic with the big black connector under the dash shows that you are missing a relay. That's either an aftermarket alarm relay or where the starter enable relay should plug in. I could tell you which, but I would have to know where the wiring to the connector is coming from. As for the other wires with 2 2-wire connections on each end, that's anyone's guess. It could be a bypass of some sort.

Pull codes from the ECM and check to see if you are getting a code 46... That's a sure indicator of VATS trouble (no VATS fuel enable signal to ECM).

Re: no start / wiring issue

Hey fellas thanks for the responce.
Am my engine did turn over like it had a fuel problem !
But after the air intake regasket I filled it up bc she was low on gas !
She was running for idle relearn and she just shut off !
And never started back up ! The engine turns over freely b wrench or socket and ratched
So it not hydrolocked !
My vats was never a problem when I got the car the old ign switch was thrown under the dash
No cut wires no streched wires ! I changed out the tumbler and got a new key !
The ssecond wire the 2n2 wire came in the car it wasn't cut I cut out the exposed wires !
Iam thinkin maybe a rat was livig in the car when it waz sitting up for a year !
Is there a way to tese the vats box ?

Re: no start / wiring issue

The easiest way to check to see if the VATS is working is to pull codes from the ECM. If the ECM spits out a code 46, the VATS has a problem, either with the module or the key, and it isn't sending the fuel enable signal to the ECM to turn on the injectors.

Re: no start / wiring issue

Under the left side kick panel (the one bolted to the side under the dash, not the black hush panel bolted to the bottom of the dash), there are 2 relays. One is the power door lock relay assembly, tucked into a recess where the inner door hinge bolts are, and the other, not too far from that, should be the starter enable relay. The VATS module on its own doesn't have a relay as it is a computer module and pulls a very small amount of current (relays are used on high current circuits and those controlled BY a computer). If there is a third relay under there, it's probably a disable relay for an alarm system (which will look WAY different from the factory connector, which will probably be square like the one in the pic).

One end of that 2-wire extension thing looks as though it plugs into the clutch start switch. Where the other end goes is anybody's guess. You said the "SECURITY" light doesn't come on in the dash. I'd guess a fuse blew somewhere, probably either the VATS fuse or the ECM fuse. It sounds like you may have accidentally pinched a wire when you put the ignition switch in (especially since the BRAKE light stays on). Unless you knocked the connector off of the parking brake lever and it's grounding out or popped a brake line or got air in the brake system somehow. If you lowered the steering column to put the new ignition switch in, drop it again and look carefully for a pinched wire.

:edit: Also, connect a decent size wire between the yellow and green wires at that suspected relay connector and attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts, the relay needs to be replaced or plugged in and the SECURITY indicator bulb replaced. If not, you have other electrical issues.
