Distributer cap situation!

I am left with the last thing in an attempt for the bird to run smoothley. I replaced the plugs and plug wires. my mechanic said to maybe replace ( i forget the name of it) its located underneath the rotor in the distributer cap. and see what happens when i do that. should i try that or just replace the whole distributer cap? (p.s im tight on $$)

Thanks.

What's the engine doing that makes you think that either the pickup coil or the ignition module need to be replaced?

Re: Distributer cap situation!

it stalls out. i have chabged the plugs and wires. so im going through systematically and fixin **** until i hopefully fix it. its either the gas or spark on the car. so im tackling the spark sistuation first.

Re: Distributer cap situation!

Does it just quit like you turned it of, or sputter and die. If its a hard kill, it could be the ignition module, the "thing" you mentioned under the cap. If it sputters, sounds like fuel. Did you replace the fuel filter?

Re: Distributer cap situation!

it has two ways of stalling. 1). When i stop at stop signs, the RPMs just die down and it shuts off. 2). Im getting off the high way with the cluth engaged and it will shut off when the car is still moving. Its hard to tel whether its fuel or spark problem. So I Figure If i go through one area, and fix it up and something is still wrong I can narrow it down. idk what else to do. process of elimination.

Yea, is the AMF the computer? I do have a light and have had the code checked but it was something with emissions.
