!986 firebird keeps frying computer
Ok about 4 years ago my firebird got overheated and fried the head gaskets. I went to try and start it once after it had sat for a while and heard a loud pop through the speakers. I left it alone for a while, found a new motor, dropped it in and no go. Wont get fire. Pulled the computer and it had that nasty burnt electronics smell. I bought a new computer, hooked it up, tried startin the car and it started pouring smoke out of the computer.
I figure it might be a short under the dash because it did it before I pulled the motor.
So should I tear the dash out and start there?

Check the engine wiring first. Make sure nothing's shorting out on one of the exhaust manifolds, pinched in some reassembled component, all grounds are clean and tight, and that none of the solenoids has fried and shorted.

The thing is, the "pop" and no start developed before I even pulled the bown motor. It just sat for a good month or two from the time the motor went until the "pop"

Open the computer and see what haprt of it has fried, you can narrow it down by what section fried.
each section of the board does different stuff.

One of the things that will burn out a chip like that is a short to ground before a driven device. Like I said before, make sure no wires got melted and are rubbing together or against ground. You'll need to go through a good portion of the harness for this, as just about any wire could be doing this.

Close but no prize, mine was buring out the chip just under it or in the middle the U15 chip, it was the CCP solinode on top of the charcoal canister was shorting out. Only found out as it was super hot to the touch.
But yours is different, id post in the ECM section with a title like
help ID this section of ECM buring out.
You can see where it say U14, U15, but don't see a U16, looks to be a U26 chip.

Disconnect the ECM, if it's not still out, and ground terminal A5 in the small connector (the connectors are labeled on the back) with a test light. Turn the ignition on. The test light should not work and the SES should light. If the SES doesn't light, there could be a problem there.
