Not running right.

1989 RS Camaro 2.8
My car doesn't seems to be running right. I had code 33 coming on alot and replaced the MAF senor. The car seems to run a lot better but then a week later on the highway a had another 33 and it hasn't came back on in a couple of weeks. I went through looking at vacuum leaks. The vacuum line going from the canister into a tie to the throttle body then to the EGR Vacuum Solenoid, there no vacuum at all. I left my vacuum gauge at my friends house so i can get a vacuum test until tomorrow. Should I have vacuum coming from the canister.

Timing is set at 10*

I also did a Compression test-
1- 150
3- 150
5-155

6-140
4-158
2-135

Re: Not running right.

You won't show vacuum (or very little if any) on the point you indicated in the diagram unless you open the throttle plate slightly, as this is ported vacuum (opens with the throttle plate). Code 33 means you don't have to worry about vacuum leaks as the ECM is actually receiving a high air flow reading, not a low one. Check the wiring for the MAF to make sure there aren't any shorts. Also check the film inside the MAF for warpage (as this causes a high reading due to disturbing the air flowing over the film).

Compression on cyls 2 and 6 is low... Should be less than a 15% difference between the highest and lowest readings, IIRC. Either the valves need adjustment or you should check the oil to make sure there isn't a milkshake in the oil pan due to a bad head gasket.

Re: Not running right.

I just did an oil change and the oil looked fine. When I haven't started the car in a while it will take maybe 5 to 6 cranks until it fire ups. I also just starting to get smoke from bad valve seats or could that be from valves needing to be re-adjust.

Re: Not running right.

The valves don't need to readjust unless you have a lifter problem. Even with an oil change, the lifters stay full of oil and the valves should stay set. The smoke doesn't come from the valve seats, it comes from either the seals or the guides. Seals are easy (if you have a valve spring compressor), but the guides have to be machined or pressed out and replaced.

Re: Not running right.

This car is my daily driver so maybe I'll just buy another set of heads and do a remove and replace with new head gaskets. I was thinking about adding roller rockers with a new cam will I need to re-tune my computer.

Re: Not running right.

Well, I took a look at my MAF and there was a bunch of little piece of plastic in there. I noticed something else there was oil at the end of the hose right before the throttle body. I took a look at my PCV valve and when you shake it, you couldn't hear any clicking so two bucks at AutoZone. My car runs really good and has a nice idle now. I have a 12 hour road trip tomorrow lucky I found this out before.

Once I get my other shifter for my other camaro, I'll replace that head gasket.

Re: Not running right.

You cant do a roller cam in these engines without SERIOUS block modification and even then there isnt enough oil that flows thru the passages, it would starve the cam and lifters and youre up that well known creek without the necessary utinsels

He said roller rockers, not a roller cam... Either way, both can and have been done. The rockers may need to have the studs changed, and the cam does require fabbing up the anti-rotation bars for the lifters, among other things I can't think of ATM.

:edit: Oh, and OP, I'd do a serious check of every seal in the engine if I were you. If the PCV valve were clogged, for who knows how long, it's a possibility that some seals have blown out. Which would cause the smoky exhaust (valve stem seals, for one). Run a can of engine flush through the engine about 500 miles before your next oil change to clean out the crap that's clogging the drainback passages and such in the heads. You can also use a pint of ATF for the same purpose. Also switch to a better quality oil to prevent this.

Re: Not running right.

Yep just took it from Yakima to Boise, about 400 miles. It did fine and I threw a couple of engine codes 33,34,35, seemed like they only came on after 2 hours going about 70. The motor would heat up to about 220 without fan and about 190 with fan on in about 80 degree weather. It hit about 102 and the car would not go any lower then 200 or 210 if I was up hill or what not. I just love going up a little hill and slowing down 5 miles then going up a steep hill having to downshift and about 75% on throttle just to stay 75. I also have a stuck lifter it sounds like. I change my oil from 5-30 pennzoil to 10-40 mobile one full synthetic right before I lift on my trip, my oil pressure sending unit been out for couple of months so no clue where the oil pressure was at. I made it there 400 miles on 14 to 15 gallons of gas so about 27/28 miles a gallon. I'm going to buy a new cam, lifter, timing chain, re-manufactured heads. I still need to know a good company to go with for the heads, I was thinking ARI engines. I'm going to try and do this with the engine still in the car, but no problem pulling motor out.
