All you need is the long block, you can use everything off the 2.8

Mine was 530$ from a salvage yard. It was pulled from a totaled Camaro with 60k on it. I put new plugs in it changed the oil and with buying a couple things I broke removing the 2.8 it only cost about 600$ for the swap.

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
The important thing to remember about doing the 3.4 swap is not the gain in hp from just the engine swap. The value of the swap is that you gain a much better platform to modify from and get some real horsepower gains.

is there a lot less room to install a turbo on a bigger engine(305,327,350,400) or do the kits swap in easier

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
Pillsbury listed the correct specs on the engine, far as cost, just need the shortblock and a gasket rebuild set for your old engine, search for the article by ked85 and dale on swapping it. Engine itself, depends, I managed to find myself one for $200 from a wrecked 94 someone was parting out, complete with all accessories, starter, flexplate, hell it even has the torque converter on it :P So assuming you do the work yourself, can be done for as little as $300 if you're willing to shop around for a good price.
Idk how much room v8 cars have in the engine bay, but with my 2.8 I can literally stand in the engine bay...I've done it before. And externally, the 3.4 is the same dimensions, hence being able to bolt everything from the 2.8 onto it.
Something I'm trying to remember, does anyone know offhand if the 3.4s have a reinforced lifter valley like the 3x00s do?

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
There's not much room under the hood with the V8 in there to put a turbo set-up in. Remote-mount-turbo would be a different story...
You can get a SBC V8 up to 400RWHP without any effort. You wouldn't need a turbo to reach that power level with a V8. Hell, I got a carb'ed 383 Stroker that puts out that much EASY.
If you're gonna do the turbocharged V6, though, go with the 3.4L V6. You can't really lose...

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
i hear you on standing in the engine bay is whay i was talking bout a turbo thers just SO MUCH ROOM does the 3.4 have the same externals so it should be the same size
but as i said before i am gonna go to the junkyard and swap some engines around just to get the hang of it is a 3.1 swap the same as a 3.l4 swap and if so is that the easiest swap i should start on for beginners
\
ALSO HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A TURBO CAR...........ITS LIKE HYPERSPEED

LOL! Yeah, I have driven a turbocharged car...a '97 Mazda RX-7 putting down 360RWHP...and a '96 Toyota Supra putting down 620RWHP. Both were a BLAST...no doubt.
However, you don't have to turbocharge EVERYTHING to make it fast. That's kinda Fast'N'Furious-esque...
A great, TORQUEY V8 doesn't need a turbocharger to get you to "HYPERSPEED"...LOL! Oh, by the way, TORQUE, more than horsepower, is ACCELERATION. If you make more torque than horsepower...that's a GOOD thing.
Well, in my opinion anyhow...

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
i didnt even know they had turbos in "fast and furious" i stopped watching after the 2nd
thought they just used nitrous in that movie
ANYWAY
but that big torquey v8 will be even better with a turbo im just saying an engine swap is harder then turbo isnt it
also any 1 got any tips for TAKING THE REAR END off a v6 with 3.46 and how do you produce more torque than horsepower?

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
Not really many ways to do it really, only way I know of to get the engine itself to produce more torque(assuming port fuel injection here) is to change the intake manifold properties, and some cams, otherwise, its just an inherent characteristic of the engine, that generally becomes more profound with mods, things like # of cylinders, configuration of them(ie. boxer, or V, or inline, or W), and angle of the block all factor into it.
A good example though is this, honda riceboys might be able to redline at 8k, but because they have small displacement inline 4 bangers they don't make **** for torque, now take a 350 tpi for example, and you have something around 250 hp, but over 300 ft lbs of torque if memory serves.

In all honesty, even with that much hp I doubt they would be making over 400 tq.

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
It's kind of like a lexus LFA, the thing only has 354 ft lbs of torque, but 500 or 600 some hp(couldn't find the gd hp rating on it). And imo not really, 300 torque isn't all that high, and for the intent of street races torque is what will win all other things being equal, a turbocharged 60/6 would walk all over a honda civic 4 banger. Project89 for example has well over 400 ft lbs of torque in his car with a 3.1.

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
3.4 swap is just the same as dropping a new 2.8 shortblock in would be, drivetrain in general, ie transmission and rear end, driveshaft is probably fine, I would get some chassis bracing, namely SFCs, ESP if you have t-tops or convertible.

Re: how much hp is a 3.4 rated at?
I really don't care if they had turbo's in those movies or not. All those films did was make a bunch of ricers think their D-engine Civics were FAST because they had a new intake and cat-back exhaust system. That film franchise did NOTHING good for the car-modding industry. Another reason we get a bad rap...
Peak torque and horsepower numbers are not the whole story, either. Where you have peak torque is just as important as how high it is. A lot of four-bangers won't see peak torque until like 5,500-6,000RPM and then peak horsepower around 6,000-7,000RPM. A V8 will be seeing peak torque at about 4,500RPM and peak power at about 6,000RPM...if built properly for the street.
Being able to tell someone that, "Yeah, my car makes 600RWHP and 400lb-ft of torque" might make you feel good, but, if the guy has some modicum of sense and practicality about cars and powers, you might feel bad if he asks you where you hit peak torque and you have to tell him some astronimical number of 8,000RPM.
The turbocharger will help you hit peak torque quicker, if you build the system right and pick the proper parts.
If you're gonna go with a turbocharged 3.4L V6 making 400RWHP-ish, you'll need to rebuild the transmission and get a rear-end that will take the abuse. The 2.8L V6 and the 3.4L V6 are identical in exterior measurements. Hell, even the 4th-Gen driveshaft will work...
