How the F*** do I get this engine out....

Heres the deal, 2.8, stripped to the block, need to remove it, do not have access to an engine crane or anything to mount a pulley to, before anyone can ask, yes I removed all the transmission bellhousing bolts, the problem I am having is I cannot get the engine mount brackets to clear the mount bushings while simultaneously pulling the damn thing off of the torque converter, need help, suggestions, tips, and if by any chance anyone is near pittsburgh PA, perhaps someone can lend a hand....

i've always found it easier unbolt the trans and take out the crossmemer and then with all the stuff out of the way i wrap a old v belt around the mount and pull like hell to drop the trans out....then you have some more room to get to the torque converter...un bolt it...that should give you the wiggle room to get the engine pulled. i don't know your financial situation but if you can afford 3 4x4's and a come-a-long burry the 2 4x4's sticking up like an I and put the other across the top....builds the perfect swing set engine hoist it's what i use...even though every chance i get i borrow my buddies hoist...way easy.

Re: How the F*** do I get this engine out....

I'm pulling the torque converter its rusted as hell, the 3.4 one is a decade newer and still painted blue, not rust, the transmission is unbolted from it, and I don't feel like dropping the trans or K-member.......fortunately I seem to have come up with my own method...jack the engine and trans up(to keep them on the same plane so as not to tweak anything) then unbolt the brackets and drop it back down....now I just need to figure how to lift it out of there without killing myself and or my back which already hurts like hell..also worried that when I pull it off the torque converter it will want to drop on the firewall side of the K-member, think I will need at least 3 people, which will be a tall order....one with a rope around the torque converter/flexplate to keep it from falling back, and 2 to pull it forward and lift it out of the car somehow...
And project89 have you gotten any of my txt messages since moving to Iowa? You never replied to any of them...
I could obtain the 4x4s(I already have 1 huge one, and know where to snag more for free, problem is I couldn't put them into the ground here, even if I did have the tools to, don't have the time to either...trying to have this thing running in 2 days....

Re: How the F*** do I get this engine out....

Um, dude, the torque converter should have enough room to push back into the trans and uncouple the center support from the crank. Why you're not dropping the trans is a mystery, however. All you need is a floor jack since you've got pretty much everything else loose already (don't forget to disconnect the cooler lines along the frame rail and the radiator). You do realize that engine weighs pretty close to 200 pounds or so, right, alone, even with the heads and such pulled?

Personally, I think you can do it, but you'll also need to pull the camshaft just to have something to grab on to or slip chains through or whatever (the cam bearing holes).

I doubt you'll even get the engine out in 2 days, much less the 3.4 in and running without an engine hoist, cherry picker, makeshift A-frame, whatever.

Re: How the F*** do I get this engine out....

Ok, now hang with me on this one. You're going to need a jack, a truck with a winch, a couple 2x4's, a sleigh, a mattress and alot of grease. 1st unbolt the tranny & get it out of the way. Then jack the block up so it's above the motor mounts. Now prop the 2x4's between the bottom of the motor & on top of the radiator support. Grease those babies up good because you're going to need it. Stick the mattress in front of the car. Stick the sleigh under the block & tie the winch around the block. Grease the sleigh. Go crazy with grease. Grease the winch. Grease the block. Grease the mattress. Grease the truck too. Have your friend jam on the gas while shouting 'go baby go!' and that thing will just fly out of there! Good thing you put that mattress there to catch the block as it rockets out of the car. Putting it back in is the same, only backwards and requires the use of explosives.

Seriously though, why no cherry picker? If you can get the car high enough on jack stands just put a tranny jack under the block, unbolt the k member & pull the block & k out. I think trying to pull it out from the top with a bunch of people crowded around it isn't the safest route. Do you have the crank & EVERYTHING stripped from the block? It's only ~100 or so pounds completely stripped which is a little more manageable.

Uh, no. Haynes clearly states installation is reverse of removal. You listed no explosives to remove.... amateurs

Haynes says a lot of things that frankly are just plain stupid or entirely inaccurate, for example it says to pull the transmission to, which means a lot more work than necessary.

Pulling the engine and trans ain't too bad...did it with a 305 and an auto.

This may seem like an...INSANE thought, but...WHY ARE YOU NOT JUST BUYING/BORROWING A ENGINE HOIST?

Actually, Haynes says to cut the floor to pull the trans on the 2.5 and the V8 cars (to get at the upper bolts which are easily accessed once the trans crossmember is removed and the trans is hanging ) and to leave it attached to the V6 and yank the whole deal together.

Before I got an engine hoist my friends truck had a winch and we tossed the cable over pretty large tree branch and hooked it up to the engine. and just pushed the car out from under it and dropped it back down.
