Fuel gauge giving wrong reading. Help
A little about my car.
89 2.8l firebird. pretty much stock, and p.o drilled an amplifier above the fuel tank so now it has holes in it, and i can only fill it up to about half way.
and thats about as much as i know about my car.

Just recently my fuel gauge has been giving out a wrong reading. i.e. it would show it being 1/4 full, but it would actually be empty. i dont know if its the holes in the tank that could be messing with the reading or what. if you guys could please help me out, it would be greatly appreciated!

oh and btw im not an expert car guy, lol im on the novice side.

Ive got the same issue with an inaccurate fuel gauge. Its most likely a bad sending unit in the fuel tank. Im just dealing with it because the part alone is $300, plus another $100 for the fuel pump and then labor if you dont do it yourself. Since your fuel tank has holes drilled in it, you may wanna look into getting it all replaced though, thats just dangerous!!!

I agree, if your tank has holes in it your gonna gave to fix it. Your Sending unit has most likley gone bad and is sending the wrong resistance to your gauge.
I think your a little high on your sending unit estimate. Rock Auto sells the SPECTRA PREMIUM sending unit for like $130. I know because I just replaced mine. With a really good Bosch pump from rock auto parts is a little over $200.

I never noticed you live in Michigan too, cool.
But Rock Auto is a website that I discovered about a year ago. Someone I work with knew about it, never seen any ads for it or anything. Their prices on parts are really good compared to the chain stores (advance, AZ, etc.) and shipping is always very reasonable and fast. I don't know if they actually operate any stores, but they have just about everything on their website.

What I'd tell you to do is look around for someone local who knows these cars and does work on the side. A guy I work with did my pump and sending unit for $200, half of what I would have payed a shop.
Oh, and the Bosch pumps are amazing. I'd highly recommend a new one of them!
