rough idle?

After i start my car is idles horribly, this only started recently, i got the car running thursday and it ran rough for alittle but eventually smoothed out so i thought i just had alot of extra gas in my engine from cranking on it alot. well yesterday i went to take the car around the block and i got half way down my driveway and the car just died....well fast forward, my hot wire to my started was lose so i tighten the bolt down and started the car and its running rough, the batterys charged, the maf sensor new, the injectors are new, so what could be causing me problem now? same thing as in the beginning, too much gas? im kinda lost here that its just starting to do this recently.

Does that mean you have a code 45? If it does, the first thing to do would be to pull a plug and hook it to the coil to make sure you have a good white spark. It may take some time for the plugs to clear off from the gas. Better yet, pull all the plugs and make sure they aren't black.

The next thing to do would be to pull the O2 sensor out of the exhaust and get a good look at it. It may need to be replaced.

Re: rough idle?

no i mean my plugs are gapped at .45 not a code 45, i the 02 sensor infront of the cat? and i'll pull the plugs to double check the gap and the spark, also ill make sure they arent black.

Re: rough idle?

would being low on gas cause this? the reason i ask is because i only put $17 in the tank an my gas gauge went from empty to over half a tank so could this also be a cause?

Re: rough idle?

AZ probably means you have 3 choices for an O2S... There's only one, about a foot in front of the catalyst. And it may take some force to remove. Definitely check for codes first before you pull anything off as it may tell you what needs to be pulled. Let the engine get hot (radiator fan turn on and then off again) and make sure the SES light isn't on full time.

Re: rough idle?

Re: rough idle?

SES is Service Engine Soon... Air bag is INFL REST light... If your SES is on all the time, the ECM has detected a problem. First code to pop out with the engine OFF should be 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, and a longer pause before repeating twice and then any other codes. And your 86 doesn't have an INFL REST light due to no air bag.

Trust me, these are not newer cars that have 2 or more O2 sensors, the thing is ONLY in the exhaust pipe under the car. Newer cars (4th gens) MAY have them in the exhaust manifolds, but ours don't. Pull the codes first, though.

Re: rough idle?

If everything is working properly, yes, the ECM will spit out 3 code 12s and then any other codes each 3 times before cycling back around to code 12, which means that all errors have been reported. Best to write down the codes as they are being flashed.

Thank you, i know hes in a better place, that man taught me alot about cars, even showed me how to do a burnout and let me drive for the first time in his new impala the second day he bought it which my grandma is paying off then giving to me., also might add that if it wasnt for him i wouldnt have owned either of my camaros and they wouldnt be running since he funded my car.
