Re: Rebuilt or crate?
Idk I think I have heard others claim as much, I think it all depends on the setup tbh, a crappily tuned FI car may very well have poor gas mileage, or if any # of sensors are wonky that can cause bad gas mileage, honestly I would love to go carb, but I know very little about them, and would like to have DIS, also plan to do a hybrid swap and there is no intake for a 3x00 that can use a carb.....

Re: Rebuilt or crate?
update for this thread... I picked up a full set of injectors for a 3.4 recently. I'm looking for a 3.4 to either rebuild or have it rebuilt.
my 2.8 is running like a champ, but I'd love to have an engine on a stand that I can drop in whenever the day comes

Yeah I know that feeling, I am hoping once I start school I can get some money together during the paid internship phases to get a spare 3.4 or maybe even a 3x00 to build up, building the engine on your dd with the engine in the car just doesn't work too well
A 3900 or 3.6 llt would be especially nice, but I don't see myself having the money or luck to find one of those I could get.

Junkyard engine. Its the only way its gonna be worth it. Throwing a rod at 10k is because of a poor rebuild. Find a factory engine with some miles on it and if you take care of it, it'll last. Use a 2.8 or 3.4. Absolutely no sense in swapping in a 3.1. Thats like using mid grade gas or synthetic blend engine oil.

Castrol "synthetic" being a good example if memory serves its not actually synthetic, and has wax in it. For good synthetic, royal purple, or better yet eneos(if you can find the stuff) is the way to go.
Re: Rebuilt or crate?
you are think of castrol synthetic blend not full synthetic. you are correct about royal purple is great but about any full synthetic is better then regular oil

Re: Rebuilt or crate?
first of all,. let me say I have no interest in swapping a v8 into my car... if you are going to tell me to, save your breath. If I want a V8 car someday, I'll buy one.
Second, I'm not a racer. While I wouldn't mind a little more HP, I'm not willing to sacrifice thinks like a QUIET exhaust and Air conditioning to get there.
With those things out of the way, let me ask you all... What's the key to getting a good quality rebuilt v6? The last one I got only lasted me 10K before it threw a rod, so I'm hesitant to go there again. I've been looking at crate engines, but man, are those prices scary, and they seem to be built for the HP junkies
When the day comes that my engine wears out I will probably upgrade to a 3.1 or a 3.4, but even that isn't a must. (it's running great now, but I don't know if this is the original engine, or it's already been swapped)
I just want something reliable and tough... when I do this swap I want an engine that will start, run, and LAST.
Do you have to go crate to get one that will last over 100K?
