Anyone Port & Polish their 2.8L intake??

I have to tear the intake down soon in order to replace my valve cover gaskets, and was wondering the procedure for porting and polishing my intake components. And do all the parts have gaskets that I could use to help me with this procedure??

Just about all of the parts do have gaskets between, if you're going to stick to mainly gasket matching. Other then that, all I know is that it supposedly makes a HUGE difference. Good luck!

I know Todd (the 2.8 Fiero dude that visits sometimes) has done this. I looked for his old message, though, and couldn't find it. Apparently they only gave us 2 pages to keep old messages on! Maybe he can tell us what happened again?

Why? It's already in the V6 forum.

I did it, if you do it you need to go by a good intake gasket kit (I think mine was 30 bucks) and it has all the gaskets you can use for guides. Todd can proll explanin all this better than i can but here are my thoughts

I used a air powered Die grinder, several shaped grinding stones, a couple shaped carbide bits (acouple with 6 inch long shanks that were realy helpfull, but more for the heads than the intake) but what I think I used the most was a bit made from a long rod with a grove cut in the end of it. into wich I slipped a peice of 80 grit emmery 'ribbon' (I'm not sure if thats the proper name for it, but its only about half an inch wide and comes in like 25 foot rolls), making sort of a flap wheel that worked wonders on the soft aluminum. The main points of consern is were the middle section meets the lower section they don't seem to match up well at all and there was a bit of grinding to do on them. The top section realy isn't work able.. the bends are too tight to do much with the tool I had

I have some pics of my lower and middle sections after I got done with them if you want to see... I however did this while rebuilding the entire engine, and I also ported and polished the heads and what I could of the exhaust manifolds so I cant realy tell you how much you will gain by just doing the intake. But Good Luck

Thanks for all of the replies. I was thinking maybe if it didn't cost too much that I'd go up to Pick N'Pull and snag the intake off of a 2.8 there and have the extra to work on so that I can do it really well. Then I can buy some good felpro gaskets and to some gasket matching! There aren't too many 3rd gens at Pick N' Pull, but there are a crap load of 2.8L V6 Chevy Celebrities. Score! But that's depending on price. Thanks for the help. And by the way, I'd love to see some pics of the work you did. Just send 'em to me in an e-mail. Thanks again.

87LT, I couldn't help but look at my spare intake parts last night! Got a question for ya regarding the intake manifold (lowest part):

Did you do anything with the shroud that appears to be around where the injectors fire? The hole GM did for the injector is very "open" to airflow on the side that faces the port- but it's very "closed" on the opposite side... it's very close to the edge of the port. Ah- a description: Sorta like an eyeball would look, when the person's looking to the left. Know what I mean?

(Still on the lower manifold) Also, right before the injector, the airflow seems to take a turn (to face the injector). There's a groove cut in that turn. Any idea what that's for? Is that to channel air at the injector? Did ya do anything with that?

Thank you!

Oh SW are the intakes from front wheel drive 2.8's the same? I heard somewhere that the assembly might have a rotation to it.. and if the FWD assy was put on our RWD cars, the throttle body would face the firewall. Any ideas on this?

Yeah, TomP... The intakes from a FWD vehicle are a little different. My Beretta's 3.1L engine, if put in my Camaro, would have the throttle body facing the firewall, and the water neck on the rear of the engine.

I've heard that for building V6/60s with blowers, that the FWD intake is handy, because it moves the water neck out of the way on the front of the engine.
