The pain of an oil leak
The pain of an oil leak
Ok, I put my car on the ramps, and I found where Im leaking oil from. i either have a defective pan, or i have a defective pan gasket, or both. I am going to change both, becuase neither is pricey. and just hope for the best. Is doing this going do be a big project? The exhaust is right directly under the oil pan. Could somebody tell me how I can do this? Is this something I have to have done professionally, or will I be able to do it myself?

It is something you can do yourself. But it won't be easy.
Just behind the catalatyc converter there is a flange with two bolts and a hanger.Remove those bolts and unplug the O2 sensor.Where the exhaust manifold and the y-pipe meet, there are two bolts on each flange.Remove them. The exhaust will drop down out of the way(as long as the car is up off the ground).
Remove the bolts that hold the motor mounts together. This will allow you to raise the engine so the oil pan will clear the cross member and give you some room to work with.
I am about to do this because I bottom'd my RS and dented the pan.I have a slow leak around the drain plug now.DAMNIT!
The only problem you may have is clearing the oil pump pick up tube.
Does anyone know if the oil pan has the splash gaurd(or whatever it is called) inside or is it all open?
When we pulled my 2.8 apart I didn't pay any attention to this.

YES IT DOES HAVE THAT DAMN THING THAT GETS IN THE WAY BEST I CAN REMEMBER. IWOULD NOT RECOMMENED DOING THIS TASK BY YOUR SELF. YOU DEFINATELY HAVE TO JACK UP THE MOTOR. IT GOES HIGH ENOUGH THAT IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE A BLOWER HANGING OUT OF THE HOOD. MAKE SURE THAT THE HOOD IS RAISED BEFORE YOU START. I HAD A GM PERFORMANCE MECH DO MINE AND HE REGRETED THAT HE TOOK THE JOB. IT SUCKED. GOO LUCK WITH THE CHANGE.
DAMN!!!!!That sucks

Not to be an *** , but if it's oil down the back of the motor, are you sure it's not the o-ring around the distributor shaft?
Before I replaced my y-pipe, I soaked the manifold-to-y-pipe flange bolts with Liquid Wrench for about a week straight.
