How many of you have seen this in Summit?
Tesla Electronics: GTech Performance Meter. Supposedly this little black box that looks like a radar detector plugs into your cigarette lighter, mounts onm your windshield, and measures your 0-60, 1/4 mile, 60-0, lateral acceleration, and even HP? (This last one doesn't make any sense)
Has anyone seen or used this? Do they work? If so, how the hell does it measure these things? I'm thinking for $140, if its actually legit, its worth every penny.

My local car club bought one a while back. It's usually not 100% accurate, although it is pretty close for the automatic trans cars... Hard shifting with a stick will throw it off a bit.
As long as it's consistant, you can use it to tune your car, which is why we bought it. Most people notice that they always register the MPH higher than what you would get at the track, but that's because it's measured different. The G-Tech measures your speed the instant you reach the end of the 1/4 mile, where at the track they take an average between two points at the end of the track.
G-Techs can also measure lateral G forces...

Yeah Dan, I saw that in the ad. So you think they're fairly accurate? What do you think of the claim that they can supposedly measure HP. How the hell is that possible?
Dan, any other info you can give about this thing I'd really appreciate. If I'm gonna spend $140 on one of these, I wanna know what others think of their accuracy, etc. Please let me know anything you can!

We gave a few away at http://www.f-body.net a long time ago. They're pretty accurate, in fact, they're supposedly a bit more accurate than the racetrack, as Dan pointed out.
That's one of the reasons I haven't bought one; could you have imagined if I hit the 16's on the Gtech, only to get my 17.04 at the track? Ugh.
But I have thought about getting one lately; I could fine-tune my racing skills- as in tire pressures, powerbraking to ???? RPM, etc- without spending $20 for 3 runs at Englishtown.
Look around tho dude, I think http://www.jcwhitneyco.com sells them for $120. If they don't, I know I've seen 'em elsewhere.

Thanks Tom...I am seriously considering getting one. I'd like to know what the few mods I have done have added to the car's 0-60. Also, it's something that will be good to have for any car I will own...and as you said, it's great for fine-tuning.
But do you have any idea HOW they work? I am very curious about this...

From what I heard Jason, they read the movement of the road. It acts like a radar and see how fast you are going to measure, 0-60, 1/8, 1/4, etc.
Am I right?

They have a website on it. It's got some kind of chip immulsed in a some kind of silicone with some kind of sensor around it. By measuring that first chip it can tell acceleration. And it uses that and the weight of the car.. aw hell go search for the site

On their site (www.gtechpro.com, I believe), they advertise that under the worst conditions (bumpy road, crappy shocks, lots of vibration, whatever), the G-tech will still be accurate within 3 HP (rw dyno),1 MPH hour (1/4), and I believe .2 seconds (1/4 and 0-60) trap speed.
Group purchase, anyone?

Hehe....group purchase??? Nah...I'll go for it on my own!! Thanks Reno for the site address.
If anyone will be in the MA area, lemme know ahead of time...I'll be happy to let you borrow it!!
Is there gonna be any sort of gathering for this board in the NE area? I know NEthirdgen.org is having one, but its too far away.

Absolutely....problem is, the closest V6'er to me is Tom in NJ. I think we're scattered all over...but I'd love to meet some of you guys.
Anyone wanna make a trip to the New England countryside? Maybe NY??

What are V6's famous for? Going a lot of miles (so we should all be able to make it to a gathering), and being cheap.
To satisfy the second, we can all meet at 3.1firebird's house (near St. Louis, middle of the country), I'll bring a G-tech, entry fee is a case of the cheapest beer you can buy, and we'll use the G-tech to race up and down the hick farm roads he's got down there! No need for a track, and I'm sure we can all sleep in our cars on his street. =)

LOL LOL...aww come on, guys, St. Louis?? That's no compromise!! Hey Tom, if these guys can't come our way, wanna carpool??
Seriously though, I think we should start setting up a V6 gathering site, if there are enough people who wanna join in. I say we start a Northeast alliance, and make Graemes, Fast RS and Monkie drive all the way out...they can race each other and beat the crap outta each other all the way here, and I can save some gas

Who said anything about inviting the big bad moderator?
And I'm in Chicago, so I guess the NE wou'dn't be too bad, but I'm thinking route 66 (about an hour from here) is kinda in the middle of the country...
