Well I tried 87 octane....

And I have to say, I wasn't impressed

I ran the tank down near E, then went and got $10 worth of 87 (6.6 gallons). While I loved paying $1.49 for gas, it didn't make for a happy ending.

I got down the street, let the 87 set in a little bit, and did about 4-5 runs from just off idle to about 4000 or so. It didn't feel the same, and it appeared to run rougher (some of that "roughness" could be I was sensing my ever-growing (but still small) exhaust leak) and didn't have the same pull.

Now, maybe it was just the ECM adjusting to the 87 after 9 months of nothing but 93. I didn't floor it to see how bad detonation would be.

About 10 miles down the road I filled the car up with another 6 gallons of 93, pulled out of the station, let it mix together with the 87 and yanked on it, and it felt better.

Could be psycological, but for the .20 a gallon, I'll stick with the better stuff.

Comments??

If they have it around try 89 or 91! It should do about the same as 93.

You've used 93 for 9 months!? I bet that ate a hole in your pocket! I use 87 all the time. Well today I put in $4 worth of 89, didnt give me **** tho. But I used 89 all the time for a long time but then I just said beep it and started using 87. Cant really tell any difference. The 87 is cheaper so thats what I use. Dunno what to tell ya tho!

Monkie, I use 93 because of the chip. You wouldn't have a reason to use any more than 87 in your car (or any stock 2.8/3.1 for that matter).

Garmer, the way I see it, around here there is only a .05 difference to go from 89 to 93. For the .05 more, I figure what the hell...go for it!

how dare you speak of the 87 octane, j/k. I read you really dont need to use anything higher than 89 octane in a V6 since it doesnt need the hight combustibility like a V8 does. I myself have to use 93 since i have the hypertech chip, its kinda cheap around here, some places $1.10 a gallon, so its not that bad.

$1.10 for 93?? ARGH!!!!!! My Hypertech chip's making me pay $1.69 for it, and that's the cheapest its been! Most places around here are $1.79.

Whenever I use anything lower than 89 my Camaro wants to "disel" whenever I shut it off. So I only run 89 or higher.

I always filled my car up with 89. It ran pretty good. I tried putting in 87 once though, and it didn't seem to pull as hard, and ran a little on the rough side. Maybe it's just a V6 thing.

Jason where I live 89 is only a penny more than 87, but 93 is .20 more! So I run 89, and everything runs fine!

Monkie, you shouldnt have fealt any differnece since you have the stock chip!

my dad ran 93 for about 8 years in the bird, and then ran 89 for 6, i got the car, and ran 89 for a month, and then do one filling of 93 octane. Since i got the new motor, (after 233,000 miles) i've run nothing but 93 octane, and things are all good for now, but then, i've only got 1000 miles on this engine. oh yeah, i can pick up 93 octane for 1.35 here in St. Louie
