coil
My coil is about to die in my 87 SC. I was wondering which one I should get? I've heard that mine is referred to as an HEI coil, but on msd's webpage the one that looks like mine is this:
However this is the picture of msd's HEI coil which is internal:
I also am looking at accel 8.8mm wires. If anyone can leave feedback on this I would be very grateful. Thanks.

If you've got a third gen V6 you want MSD-8226.. the external replacement (the first pic). Internal HEI coils are V8 only.

If you're replacing the coil and wires, you might as well go the full 9 yards and get the cap, rotor, and plugs.. make your entire ignition system new from the ground up.. I don't know of any performance caps/rotors for the V6s, but I haven't really looked.. definitly reccomend Bosch Platinum 4+ plugs though.. kinda expensive but dyamn.

If you've got the cash to spare and want to make your ignition truly new from the ground up you'll want to replace the ignition module too.. it's about the most critical element as it's what supplies power to the coil. Ignition control boxes like the MSD 6A or 6AL are known to give decent HP/TQ benefits. If you can't go that far, a normal MSD module should be available

I used the plain non-spiral core 8mm universal V8 set.. I should have gotten the spiral cores but due to an emergency and none in stock, c'est la vie. I think you're looking at the 8.8mm graphite core sets

People give mixed reviews, but I'm a big fan of Accel, myself. Accel cap and rotor, and DEFINATEly 8.8 wires. the 8mm's are great, until you put a higher voltage through them, then they fall apart. Also, Accel makes a high output coil for our engines, and I believe it's cheaper then MSD's. I'm running the whole 300+ system, and I think it rocks.
As for plugs, I used to work in an auto parts store, and trust me, PLEASE, Bosch +4's do nothing for the way the ignition is setup in our cars. Not trying to flame anyone who says they felt a gain, but you always feel a gain when you change your plugs. ESPECIALLY on an upped-voltage system, you don't want platinum plugs of any type, much less the Bosch's. I personally run Splitfires, and I like them a lot. I don't know if they give me more power then a normal plug, but they take a serious beating more then others.

I second Reno's positive impression of Accel. I have an Accel cap/rotor/8.8 wires and coil, and have been very happy with the results.
I also agree +4s are no good. Splitfires may be good, I've never used them...I like my AC RapidFires though!

i like accel products too..
yes the first coil pic (external one) is the right one for your car if its a v6..
secondly def get a new cap and rotor wires, etc.. also get a packet of "dielectric grease" put a small, and i mean small film of it on the inside of all your boots on the wires, not only will it keep them from sticking and breaking when you take em off, it will keep moisture out and prevent corosion.. as far as plugs, i dont care for any bosch plug, or any multi electrode plug (ie splitfires), either go with acdelco rapid fires or some name brand triple platnum plug..

It's something coming from his overactive imagination, Monkie.. no thirdgen ever recieved the rank of SS. I'm sure a few people with heavy aftermarket mods have decided theirs is worthy.. but an rs? with a 3.1? uhm, no.
