All my V6 buddies please step in, need your advice!

Ok the other day I was taking this girl home and I noticed my temp gauge going up and up. It reached about 230 or so and it usually rides around 160 or so (guessing) and I got really worried cause I was in rush hour and I knew that wouldnt help. But whats so strange is when I was stopped at a light with it in neutral the temp went up faster than when I was driving. And it was climbing pretty fast so I knew if it went into the red that wouldnt be good. So I kept it under 1500 rpms as much as I could when I was driving (tranny didnt like that). But after I did that the temp went down pretty fast. And after that night it has been running cool. And I know my gauge isnt ****ed because all the signs are right. In the morning its cold and after I drive it it warms up. But since then my car has been running about 30 degrees cooler I think. But hey Im not bitching about that, it makes alot of difference when I get on it. But I just think its weird as crap! But how is that for a free mod?

But what I really wanted you guys for is what do you think I should do next? My cat is clogged so Im gutting it. Buying a high flow one is just stupid I think! But I dont know what to do, should I buy my grille and paint it and all because I hate the look of the RS grille. Or should I save up and get a dynomax exhaust? Only thing Im not sure with about the exhaust is will I get all these kool things you guys talk about them? Like sound and power? I mean I dont think my car can sound much better without adding 2 more cylinders. Keep in mind I have the Z28 exhaust. So...now its your turn. Whatcha think guys!? Next mod, what should it be?

Monkie i jsut think your car is pissed off to lol. get a high flow cat they r 70 bux. biut i think the cat might have somethin to do with your temp goin up.
During the summer it was 110 out and my fan wires got chewed off by a damn rat and i was on the 405 lets jsut say my temp went past the red for about 30 mins the car was running werid during that when i would dtop it would lunge forward lol. So later i went to my friends shop and he fixed it for me i was doin 90 in a 35 zone to keep it cool it droped it down to 260. and becasue of that incodent i have no problmes no blown headgasket nothin and i was hopin the engine would go to. it probly takes a bomb to destroy our lil v-6

ok, guys don't bite my head off or anything, but it has actually been proven that taking off or gutting ur cat can actually slow ur car down b/c yeah it might help out h.p., like give us maybe 3-5 h.p. but u forget about one more important # torque. remember back pressure= torque. i had no cat and ran my car at Moroso, then i redid my exhaust w/a high flow cat and actually picked up 3 mph, and .1. just my .2 though

Monkie, you wrote "But whats so strange is when I was stopped at a light with it in neutral the temp went up faster than when I was driving."

I'm confused about what you mean. Of course the temp will rise faster when you are stopped at a light, neutral or not (makes virtually no difference in the rpm). Lack of forward motion equals lack of air flow over the radiator. If your fan's running, you'll pull some air in, but nothing like airflow will drive through it when in motion.

it sounds as if your fan took a long lunch or your thermostat stuck neither is good check the wireing for the fan and change the thermostat. As for mods go with a high flow cat.I used the dynomax high flow 2.75 inch and the rev is very good with almost no loss of bottom end.Remember ox isn't just important for us but for our cars too!

yeah, my car was overheating too. and after 1 fan motor and 5 hours of work, we realized that the plastic cover around it was just bent up and prevented the fan from turning. lol

Damn it! It did it again last night! Same thing, rush hour and at the SAME PLACE. What is causing this? And its only at low speeds, like between 0 and about 15 mph. Whats going on guys? And yesterday the high was in the mid 60s and I think the other week when it gave me the same problem it was warm too. So whatcha think? Oh and help me out with the next mod too!

Yo monkie. I got the same deal. Our cars just dont like to go slow. Thats the real problem . Anyways. I would first off switch out the RS grille. basically cus its ugly as crap compared to the fog grills. That will give a lil less restriction to the radiator. The reason the car gets warm is because its not moving, when ur car is moving it can pull the air thru the radiator much easier and faster. U could go to a lower temp thermostat. Flush the coolant, jus to get a nice even mix in there. i wonder if the IROC dual fan setup would fit in our housing? There is a JET fan switch that turns the fans on at a lower temp or u can just wire them to be on at all times or to a manual switch that u select when its on. I also put some ... I think it was called Purple Ice or something like that. Its sposed to help lower the temp of the coolant just by mixing it in.

Point is this behavior is perfectly normal ... for our cars anyways.. when their moving fast they stay kool and happy. traffic or stop and go and it gets cranky.

Other than that jus check out the hoses and look for any leaks or clogs. and the AIR DAM ... make sure its there. Mine got torn off in all the snow we had so i gotta put it back in.

Try this.....

check coolent level in radiator and puke tank
check condition of radiator(you know...for bugs,weeds and rustangs )
check fans
check thermostat
check water pump(remove rad cap and watch for the coolent to move.It will drop drasticly when the thermo opens...I know...DUH!!!! )
check temp sensor for guage
It could be a number of problems. As for the grill....depending on the price go ahead and buy it and send it to me I'll pay you back

Yea Monkie my car used to do that to. The fan plug was funny. After I discovered what was turning the fans off(The plug not making good connection) I could just get out of my car and poke the plug with a stick and every thing was cool, until next time. From my personal experience, even if everything looks good, it might be the plug, or Fan switch is bad.
Just a few Ideas.
About your next mod, what happened to saving for the Turbo 6?
