89 Firebird air box
Hi, what does that large rectangular box do thats in front of the intake.it seems like if it was removed and replaced with a pipe it would remove some restrictions in the air box system. What do firebird owners out there think.

i left it so i could mount the sensor for my intake guage. I think if u actually took all the restrictions out of the box it wouldnt hurt you. (the fins on the intake side, the fins inside the box.)

Sure, 89, but I think you have the later air intake system than I do...
My intake "looked" like this:
Throttle body
TB hose, wide oval, 10" or so straight
Rectangular air duct (plastic box)
MAF sensor to the bottom pass. side of air duct
30 degree angle pipe on MAF
85-88 air box (clean air through side, dirty through top)
Now it looks like this:
Throttle body
Camaro TB hose, 3" round, usual length
3" exhaust pipe, 90 degree, curves to pass side
MAF
Flex hose
K&N
That rectangular box was very restrictive... I don't know why GM bothered with it.

I replaced my entire intake with chrome 3" metal piping. for my firebird i used a intake for a 99 honda civic, and a j-bend pipe, and a rubber coupler to connect the two pipes together. i then added a humongous K&N filter and put a breather on an extra opening on the pipe and connected the vacum line to the other whole. I'll have pics as soon as possible.
