serious question for the v6 guys
hey guys, 2 of my friends have a car with a 2.8 v6 motor. one has a celebrity and one has a 87 firebird. how many miles do youall get out of one of these things?? we tried to blow up the celebrity and couldn't!! we did everything short of draining the water and oil!! we even drove around in 1st gear!! and that freakin firebird, with 130,000miles his water pump took a dump. he got it so hot, it stalled and would not start. he had it towed, put on a new water pump and the car now has like 150,000 miles on it!!!! still runs!! i wouldn't believe any of this unless i has seen it myself!! how long do these 60deg. v6 motors last! all i can say is that they may not be powerful but they are sure strong!!!
Mine was rebuilt at 160 000k (how many miles is that? 100,000 I think), but the guy who owned it before me beat the crap out of it
... I think Tom's is at 200,000mi and still going strong.
... I think Tom's is at 200,000mi and still going strong. I know of quite afew 2.8 and 3.1's that have turned 250K. There strong lil runners if you treat em right. Also they can be powerful. I know of a GM project that got 383HP out of a 2.8L with twin turbo. I have a friend locally that has a turbo 3.1L in his Z24 that runs in the 12's on 9lbs of boost, he can crank it to 16+ if he really wants to smoke a V8. My old firebird had 110K on it, last weekend the new owner put the built 3.1L block in and took apart the old one this past week. The engine had NO major signs of wear.
Mine's got 155K miles and burns absolutely NO oil or anthing.

i put a new motor in my car after it died @ 240k. It died for many reasons, racing, being broke, and some bad oil, (i didn't know when the last time it was changed) besides that there was also a friend of mine was doing a tune up and put in the wrong sized plugs, the plugs were chopped off half way, found out once the motor was pulled. All fun stuff (he doesn't work on my car anymore). But they are damn strong blocks.
175,000 miles and still hauling. Overheated it three times now, for abour 10-20 minutes each time, no blown gaskets.

I had about 145,000 before the damn intake gasket decided to take a crap on me
Before this happened the 2.8 ran smoothly, never smoked abit.
If it hadn't been for the gasket I would have had 155,000 now.
I rebuilt the 2.8 in Feb of last year.
It mostly depends on the up keep of your engine. If you keep up with the tune-ups and don't run the living hell out of it you can expect to have it for quite a while.

My one in the 85 Firebird lasted 105,000.
Radiator hose fell off, blew hole in piston.
My S-10 Blazer one died at 211,500.
Head gasket claimed it.
Deciding now, if I will scrap it or not.
Right now the Blazer is storage.

When I sold it, the RS had 170k on it, if I remember correctly....

Mine has between 101 and 102k on it. Little blue smoke on start up, new radiator, alternator (2, stupid autozone caught my car on fire the first time), water pump. That's about all.

155-156k, motor's still pounding away.. only problem with it is 1 cyl taking on oil, and it's not even taking on enough to smoke.. plug just gets fouled once in a while (and with a slightly hotter plug in that cyl, nothing).. My transmission, on the other hand, is a different story =P
Friend with a 2.8l ran itto 183k, overheated it, and seems like she seriously screwed a valve.
Heard of them hitting 440k before death when treated right.

My 2.8's set to roll over to 138,000 when I go to school monday if not sooner. There was a guy on here that said his had like 460k on it. There has been a sh!tload w/ well over 200k. Yeah the tranny is a different story mine died last summer at 124,995. But w/ me driving about 2,000 miles a month this thing about has to last me to 200k.
